As my rig sits and waits parts I was wondering how difficult it would be to upgrade my 16B(single coil/Dizzy) to the coilpack set up of later models. Has anyone done this and is it worth the effort/cost? |

I'd say not worth the effort. New cam, cam position sensor, loom, ecu, inlet manifold.... Easier to find a complete coil pack motor. You'd also have to do the water piping too. |

As Gman said, its basically a whole new ECU system because it requires a few different sensors. Post up the pics of the differences between the modules in the vit and sierra dizzy's and I may be able to help figure out how to get yours going again. If I'm correct and your engine is an early vitara unit then the pickup in the dizzy is just a simple variable reluctance sensor with a 4 equally spaced tooth pickup wheel. Sierra electronic dizzy's also use that same setup as do a heap of vehicles from 1980-2000's. I'm not sure what you mean by mirror image tho in your wanted post (hence need pics). If the unit fits in the vit dizzy and you get the spacing between the sensor and pickup teeth nice and tight ie ~1mm then it doesn't matter where the pickup sits in relation to the standard one. The ECU doesnt care where it is as long as the pickup to tooth angle is correct as thats your timing refence point. Obviously this can be adjusted by rotating your dizzy housing or rotating the dizzy shaft relative to the camshaft if its really far out. |

Jr Im gonna try and knock something up on the weekend with the sierra one, but it is definitely not just a bolt in job. If you want to know what I meant by mirror. Put one beside the mirror an you see what I have its exactly opposite bracket goes the other way from the screw holes. I can send you a photo from my phone if you want, but I cant load it up here as usual Im a photo loading nutcase |

Well it looks like I found a solution, I managed to pry the coil off the sierra bracket and fitted to the the vitara one with araldite. I let it set overnight and see how it fits up tomorrow |
