Any tips for finding out if transfer bearings are bad? i have a bad bearing/chatter/growl somewhere under there..... and my transfer knob wobbles under load but I would really like to isolate the problem before diving in.

Next time anyone is in their 92~ sierra If you put your transfer in neutral and put trans in 5th and idle... does it sound like your transfer is going to explode? any loud noises at all?

Thanks

Doesnt sound like bearings to me.

could be a broken front output i suppose. is it functional, i.e does the front tailshaft spin when in 4x4

could also be dodgy front unis in the tail shaft. noise from the diff spinning,

where does it sound like the noise is comming from.

It will knock and growl in 5th if the motor is doing an idle rotation. Its just the load on the gearset at low rpm.

do you get the same noise with the front hubs locked and in rwd? or only with it in 4 low/high

what speed, what gear and what position is the accelerator pedal in

thanks guys,

I did suspect 5th gear idle to produce gear chatter, but when my mates sierra does not do it, and the sound is similar to the running sound i second guessed.

The growl/chatter during operation happens all the time, 4wd hi/low, hubs lock 2wd, 2wd hubs unlocked. 4x4 works perfectly tanshi - other than making the noise that is.

2 issues - the noise : most notable 4th gear - 2500rpm-ish most notable tapers out a bit after - 1/2 throttle and more it makes this sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF966I3XjVo (ignore the two click noises at the end).

the vibration - high load low/mid rpm, like up a steep gradient first gear planted at 2000rpm - the transfer knob shakes and the whole car shakes and looking at it and feeling the car the frequency matches the transfer knob - but gearbox doesnt wobble...

all unis have been done except the gearbox end of jackshaft but it felt fine...

sounds like the noise is from transfer... but it screws with you because if you put your ear on transfer knob it sounds quieter than gear knob :S

driving me crazy

Check tailshafts for spline play, my Suzie had a real chatter and turned out to be the front shaft.

Possible bent long arm transfer arm
This caused my transfer to be very noisy
