Hi all, I have just fitted a Falcon Mitsubishi alternator to my Vitara, it's 1991 G16A carb, not efi.

The question I have is regarding the ribbed belt size, I have searched everywhere but cannot find which size belt to use on my engine, there are G13's G16B's but I can't find the belt length for my car.

If someone has done this conversion to their G16A, could you please tell me the belt size that you are using?

This is now the only thing holding me up other than the sense wire vs charge light wire terminals on the Falcon alt, am I correct in saying the lower pin is the sense wire with the alt mounted in the car?

Some people here mention that it does no harm to get this wrong, but I would prefer to know the correct terminal before I plug anything in.

I have found this conversion to be incredibly simple, removed the lower cast mount, drilled it out, grind the bottom of the top strap and next step is plugging it in.

for your belt size pinch your missus dress tape measure (plastic usually about a meter ) measure around all your pullys like the belt would go and then get a belt that is in the adjustment range

The tape measure sounds like the most reliable, I will give it a try when I get home.
It should at least get me in the ballpark, although I am trying to avoid multiple trips to the suppliers for slightly different length belts, which is why I originally asked the question about which belt is used on other people's conversions, or in other words, learning from other peoples mistakes, not reinventing the wheel etc!

depending on your relationship with your local Auto parts store I got 3 belts in my size range worked out which one I wanted to run and took back the ones that didnt fit
(for a G16b)

Are you sure? That sounds way too short, it has a 4pk790 on it now and it needs to be longer, at a guess I would say somewhere around 4pk850 or thereabouts.
If I understand correctly, and that's a big if, a 4pkxxx is a four rib belt, a 6pkxxx is a six rib belt, then the 790 850 etc is the inside measurement of the belt?

I just checked and 6pk620 is my hydrosteer belt :oops:

4pk820 is swift so depending on your bracketry and how close the alt sits to the water pump you might only need 4pk860 or so.

Well I can confirm that the 4PK830 is a perfect fit on a G16A with a Falcon EF/EL 110 AMP alternator, still plenty of adjustment left, just fits on without skinning knuckles.

This only required drilling out the bottom mount and pulling the connectors out of the factory round plug, fitting a winch cable to replace the lead from the alt to battery, slightly move the lower metal rad hose, only about 5-10mm.

This has to be the easiest upgrade to the Suzuki alternator, I am pleasantly surprised!

Charging at 14.75v at idle, I think this should run all the stuff on my farm shooting Vitara without discovering a flat battery after a night of shooting.

The Vit alt just couldn't cope on winter nights with the heater, wipers, headlights, spotlight and radio on while idling around the paddocks, I will test this one soon.

If anyone wants pics, let me know.

Hi I have the same car and I want to do the upgrade as well what parts do I need and you needs to be altered to fit as some people say you need crank pullies and waterpump's changed any help is appreciated

Easy and very worthwhile mod as long as you have a carby Vitara, if you don't have power steering or A/C, then check the alternator belts are the same with the std alt.
I assume they are the same, but could be wrong.

The falcon alt has now been in the Vitara for 14 months, and it is still working great, no more flat batteries (unless someone leaves shit turned on....like the ignition!) after having all accessories running for several hours, headlights, wipers, heater fan, spotlight, driving lights some of the time, radios, power windows etc.
I couldn't do that with the std alternator!

Hi ajcmbrown, I was wondering how the EF/Fl alternator was going a couple of years on?
Have you had any problems ?
I was considering attempting the upgrade. By any chance did you take any photos when doing it? or could you take any photos now?
I have a 1994 G16A but it does not have A/C. Will the same belt you use fit?

Best mod I've done with no negatives, I can even jump start my 8 litre diesel bulldozer!
I do have pics somewhere but I'll have to find them.
I'm not sure if the same belt can be used in a non A/C car, but I guess a parts listing should be able to give you an idea?

I am looking at doing this conversion in the next week or two, and adding an Optima Battery. Do you happen to have any photos?

I have been looking at alternators and would like to go new ... is this model a match for the one you have - Bosch BOBXF1260A.
