Post subject:  Sierra creeping forward on start-up
OK tech heads, who is the smartest man alive?

The one who can answer this simple question.

Why does my 92 Sierra creep forward as it starts, even though the gearbox is in neutral? If the clutch is depressed as the key is turned, it doesn't happen.

do you have transfer gears, could this be the famous suzuki circle spin ratio?

Hydraulic action inside the gearbox applies a small amount of force on the gears when not engaged.

Not good practice to start a car without a brake applied.

When I had the 660cc manual with 6.4 transfer gears and 5.12 diffs in my car it would move dramatically if started in neutral.

Even my F250 does it.

Thanks guys. I do have 6.5 gears in the transfer. Would a lighter weight oil stop this? In Winter, on a cold morning, it is enough that unless I sit in the vehicle and depress the clutch, the bloody thing won't start.

That sounds excessive. This wasn't a problem even with 5.12 diffs and a teeny tiny 660cc motor in Piggles.

What oil weight do you have in it now?

I wouldn't recommend going heavier than 80-90W although for a while there 140W was flavor of the month.

This can be useful sometimes, I had a clutch cable break one day and had to stop at some lights near home, 6.5s meant it would drive forward in low range just from the pressure on the synchros and I got it all the way to 5th where I engaged the gear and limped it home!

Yeah, I would have thought so too Steve. I'm running 80-90W in it, which is pretty much standard. Like I said, it is only during the colder Winter period, but a pain in the arse. Being a 1.6EFI one would think that it would start OK. If I don't sit in it and depress the clutch, I may have to (reaching through the window) start it up to five times before it will run.

Thanks anyhow guys. At least I now know it isn't a problem I need to be concerned about.
