Gday,

Im looking at getting a new set of tyres on my 1997 Coily.
As far as I know it has stock rims/ tyres 205/70R15, and suspension at the moment and don't plan on upgrading suspension until a latter date.
I was thinking of trying 215/80R15?
Will these fit without rubbing? Will they put much more strain on the gearbox etc?
Do you think it is a good idea or do the disadvantages out weigh the advantages?
Its used to drive 20km a day on bitumen to work through winter and the rest of the time on very soft sand beach driving. Its basically a fishing bus so don't need Mickey Thompsons or any of those top of the market tyres.......just something cheap.

Any info and advice would be appreciated.......

For what you want to use it for, I think a set of 215/75 would be the ideal choice. It wont affect your gearing too much and should have no issues with rubbing.

The reason I was thinking of 80% was to get a longer footprint when deflated? Is the 80% not a good idea?

Im not sure on the availability of a 80 profile. Whereas a few of the jimny guys run the 215/75 with no issues.

As for footprint. Zooks are so light it really wouldnt be a issue between those sizes

I ran Toyo open country AT 215/75/15 for a while on my coily. They did ok in the mud, perfect for beach or forest tracks.

Id never go back to a AT or even a 215/75.

Do you mean you would never go back to 205/70R15?

Yeah,we run Toyo 225 on standard rims and have had no issues,seem a good tyre particulary on sand and low noise on the black stuff.215 is the go on standard rims thou.,the dealer had no 215's and offered us a good/great deal on the 225's he had in stock,so will upgrade to a wider Mag. wheel in the future.
