Looking at a 2003 GV wreck with a j20a/auto to go into my lwb Sierra. Car looks in good condition, has minor front end damage, but doesn't come with any keys. Will getting new keys (without an original) and making the immobiliser work be easy/cheap or painful/expensive?

Um i was going to say it needs a new imobiliser unit which will need to be coded to the ECU then new keys / Remotes that need to be coded. Could add up. BUT.... I am sure a suzuki Dealer could plug there Tech II / SDT in and code new keys and remotes, The key should also hopefully be registered against the VIN so they can cut it ( I had a Tag on mine registered against the vin to get new remotes/keys ). First they clear them all and then program new ones. would just be the cost of the keys. prob around 60 each. I would confirm this with a dealer if they can first. I will leave the engine side and if its worth it for others to say

Are the immobilisers part of the ECU on this model? I know in my earlier model j20a GV the immobiliser/remote system is totally separate from the ECU and very easy to bypass. It is not required at all to start the car if bypassed. .

For 03 i think it is, The easist way to tell if it has a coded key is remove the steering collumn cover and see if there is a coil in front the Ignition Key cylinder. This is from the service manual, the imobiliser and ECU are separate but they talk to each other. 1: Each Ignition key has its own code (transponder code) stored in memory. When the Ignition switch is turned ON, Immobilizer control Module tries to read the Transponder code through the coil antenna installed in the steering lock assembly. 2: immobilizer Controll Module compares the Transponder code read and that registered immobilzer control module and checks if they match. 3: When it is confirmed that two transponder codes match each other as described above, Immobilizer Control Module and ECM check if the ECM/Immobilizer control Module codes registered in them respectively match. 4: Only when it is confirmed that the ECM/Immobilizer Control Module codes matched, the engine starts running. If Transponder codes in step (2) or ECM/Immobilizer control module codes in step (3) do not match, ECM will stop operation of the injector and ignition of spark plug. Prob best option is seeing if a Key can be cut by the Vin.

I have a 03 swb gv, when I bought it it needed a new key, $300 from suzuki then had to go get it cut so another $50 then take it back to get recoded I'm sure there would be a cheaper way but I needed mine done so didn't bother looking around

Ouch Joe. didnt think it would be that much Does the key look like this? There is two options with the square dots facing up the key blade part can be mirrored on some. But i think this is the one for the GV? Much cheaper option just get it cut and coded Key with Chip installed http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Suzuki-t ... 62308.html

Just spoke to the local dealer's parts guy, advised GV keys are $170, you then take it to a locksmith to have it cut to suit the barrel, then back to the dealer to have it programmed. So doesn't sound too bad, not really cheap but appears doable . Can they program a key with the VIN number only or does the car have to be there?

The Imobiliser and ECU need to be programed together with the Key that has a transponder with a code in it. Pretty much how it goes is. Suzuki plugs in SDT or TechII Loads Imobiliser funtion on the diagnostic tool. Erase old keys Put new key in ignition turn to on. Click learn new key. Turn ignition off. then start. You can try the keys from alixpress if want to get a few for spares. they do bulk like 5 for 60 delivered etc.
