Post subject:  Front 2 pinion diff Vitara and WT Sierra seems identical?

When I tried to fit a Sierra diff to my Vitara front,
it would not work because drivers side cv/axle would not fit without turning out of the Sierra carrier.
It was a 4 pinion.
I have no idea if it was a front or rear diff from the Sierra.

I scored a WT Sierra front 22 spline diff with a lock right fitted. (with couplers)
Upon measurings and test fitting of the Vitara CV/axle, it appears the carriers are identical.
Even has the cotter pin to locate the diff cross pin.
Makes sense they would share parts among the different models.
(or somebody fitted a Vitara carrier to a widetrack?)

Plan is to fit the WT carrier with my Crown wheel and refit to my front diff.
Thus not having to disturb the set up of the locker.
(The Spartan locker let me down again, one side sticks in unlocked position when it wants to)

Can anyone tell me if I am wrong or right before I get stuck into it.
(Will now have to defer air locker to rear for a bit, Vitaras need front drive to be useful)

Sierra centers don't use a cotter pin.

I have never looked at a lock right but I'm pretty sure they don't either.

Must be a Vit carrier then. Still a win for me. Armsup
Cotter pin may be wrong word. Could be called a roll pin?

Vit carrier on the left and Sierra on the right, I'm almost 100% certain that the one I gave you was a sierra carrier

Definitely from a Sierra WT front diff, it has a 3.7 ratio.
But my stub axle fits, so either way it is good news.
Your on my best buddy list now :)

PS. My terminology could be all wrong.
The piece that holds all the spider and side gears could be Vitara, but rest of diff is Sierra.

Just finished fixing the broken bits from the bog hole root/stump.
Starting on it Sunday. Saturday is full of boring stuff :)
Should get that and half the rear locker done before Mikes High Country trip.

Update.
I used the carrier from the wide track with my crown gear bolted to it.
Everything fits, in process of refitting diff/axle housing now.
PS. Steelies are heavy LOL.

I finished fitting the new 2nd hand auto locker today. Now I am glad the old locker broke down, this one is so much better. Very smooth operation, no clunks, bangs or handling issues. Maybe its better because of the brand, or because of the couplers, or because it was set up by somebody who is not me, or my original Spartan was faulty or fitted wrongly by me?. Had a 2nd hand lock rite front in my Sierra, which never failed and the rear lock rite fitted to my Vitara lasted me 5 years plus whatever original owner had it for. Time will tell, but happy so far.
