| Post subject: | Buying A Jimny... Need a little help |
Hey guys, as the post suggests I'm buying a jimny and I need a little help. My concern is that every jimny I have looked at has either a transfer or gear box leak (oilly box not really dripping on the ground) ive looked at 3 different ones today and they all apeared to have this problem. My question is this a really common problem and if there is any thing I should look at. Ive been around sierra's a long time but this is my first encounter with the Jimnys, Im also pretty handy on the spanners. |

Not that i have a huge amount of experience with car mechanics, but when i was buying mine, i wanted it to have a full service history, mainly because it meant the previous owner wasn't a tinkerer and didn't take bit and pieces apart doing their own services. But really depends on how much you are willing to spend i'd say. edit: i didn't encounter any leaks when i was buying but was looking at relatively new models no less than 4-5 years old at the time. |

What's on the back of the engine head? Cause if something is leaking up there if can drip down all over the gearbox. |

JMO - if an oil leak isn't bad enough to leave oil on the driveway when parked overnight then it isn't worth worrying about - enjoy the free rustproofing. |

Nothing on the motor only top of gear box near the back of the box |

Are you sure it isn't grease off a tail shaft? |

My 2009 model has no oil leaks at all but has done about 36,000 km. The front shaft has a grease point and if too much grease is pumped in it will flick all over the place as it comes out. |

I know they have a rear gearbox seal problem, have a look through zukenutter's thread when he blew his gearbox up. I think it's also a warranty claim jimny's have. |

ITs a 2009 and from the look of it it has only happened recently as there is fresh oil and no dirt and grim caked under there in the oil so I suspect it would be the rear gear box seal |

My 2010 has a leak out of the rear output seal. I'm pretty sure I've got a blocked breather. I've replaced the seal 3-4 times. It's an easy job, bout $6 for the seal from rep I and maybe an hrs work if that. |
