Hi new person here I just bought a 1989 Vitara automatic for my daughter 1 X major problem it does not go into reverse gear when selected. can anybody help me out?

Check fluid level - low fluid will sometimes result in flaky reverse selection. Check cable adjustment to confirm the selector is, in fact, pulling reverse. If it is, it could be time for a trans rebuild. Steve.
