no 6 port diagnostic's plug in the engine bay?
my SV vitara will store codes until the ECU is wiped & that's non OBD2.

Hi Guys, A friend had an issue with her Jim on the highway where it drove like a dog and overheated. I was guessing limp home mode so I swapped her cars. I've been driving it for a week around town without any similar issues. It does have a whistle on acceleration and a shudder on idle but that seems par for the course on these jims. I bought an elm327 in the hope to pull stored codes but have only just found out that the early jims weren't ob2 compliant with regard to the scan tools. Is there any other way to pull stored codes? I'm assuming the paperclip trick is only for active codes? Cheers, John |

My guess is faults aren't stored in the non OBD2 cars. |

not sure if it helps but mine suddenly began overheating recently & it turned out to be a seized thermostat, very easy to check & replace but you need a a rubber ring seal, thermostat & coolant. mine also has the issue with stuttering at low revs & on initial acceleration, mainly on premium unleaded, swapped out the upper O2/lamba sensor & it's been much better (still a pig on premium unleaded but excellent on regular unleaded). |

It's a 2001 Jim. Thanks for the tips guys. I took it for a run down to Yatala and back today and it pulled fine in 5th and the needle didn't go over half. It's definitely not as hot today but I thought I would at least see some of the symptoms. I've come to the conclusion that she must have accidently eaten magic mushies that day because I sure as hell couldn't replicate it. I even asked if she might have been in third instead of fifth. I got a dirty look in response. I'd say whatever it is is borderline. Might just give the rad a flush and put a new thermostat in then wait and see. Any comments on the affect a failing viscous fan might have at those speeds? I'm due to do mine and thought I could do both at once. I thought the fan hub issue would be more of a slow speed thing though. |

It will store code if just OBD 1999 -2002, 2002 onwards will be half OBD2 with Suzuki SDL so a Elm may connect but wont be able to pull codes. If it has a 16pin OBD port under the steering wheel usually to the left. I have a tool ive been using for around 2 years that can pull codes, test modes and live data, a few others have baught them too. Ive tested them on a 1999 jimny, 199 GV and my 2002xl7, There is also the pin jumper mode. Oh and failing Viscous hubs, mine was stuck on really struggled up hills. made a loud raw noise above 2500rpm as well. Dont notice it so much in norm city driving. If bearings on the hub or waterpump is failing and it over heated the engine can switch itself off if gets to hot or excessive vibration to prevent major damage. But it wont generate a fault code. Engine light flashes though which i think is weird. Norm need 3 cycles for a fault to be stored while some appear live but that's more emission faults. |

As far as I know it works on all OBD1 ECUs which can be read (and the only one that I know of that can't is the early Swift GT/GTi) - personally I've done it on a 97 SV620 & a 98 SQ420 - no active codes, so no check light, but when you run Rhinoview, you can see historical codes - there are two windows, one for active and one for historical |

Did the check engine light light up when the initial problem occurred? And if it did is it still on? (If its still on you can get the codes.) |

I wasn't driving. The owner swears it didn't but I reckon she'd be hard pressed to point out where the engine light even is. No light now hence my query related to pulling stored codes. Thanks for all the help guys. I think we'll just have to wait to see if it happens again. I'm definitely going to do the fan hub though as I can see oil seepage around it and I've got to pull the fan and rad out to put the power steering on anyway. |
