As the title says....

will i need rear chromos with an ARB rear air locker or will the standards hold up?
I have a Sierra w/t with 31" bfgoodrich muddies and 6.5 transfer gears. Usually drive around the Glass house mountains etc.

Thinking of buying some this weekend during the lror sale but if i don't really need them ill save my money. :peaceout:

I run a rear auto locker with stock axles on 30's.

I haven't broken anything yet, except I drive pretty carefully and on small tires. I also have 6.5's.

I twisted & cracked my rear axles (but they didnt fail) with a rear locker, 31s and 5.14tcase -only once in about 3 years of driving it. I think it was to do with the rear hop that you get with lockers when climbing (when it loads up the suspension then loses traction and bounces) - doing a bit of that is always going to find a weak link somewhere. I try to avoid bouncing it around now =) Riding the clutch works...

So my answer would be no... but having them does give a little piece of mind.

Totally depends how you drive.
No, not really needed.

I personally went a full floater instead

I twisted one spline, during 3 years of use with 7.2 xfer gears and 32-31" tyres and autolocker.
Other factors
When I wheel (no/low fire danger) there is generally less traction in the vic conditions
I used to mostly crawl and not use too much loud pedal.

I drive a lot more aggressive and less fear now that i've used smaller tyres for a while (which is why its a full floater now).

I'd also say no,
just inspect them regularly

Been running std rear axles in Casper for over 5 years and only ever done 1 x long axle. And that was in a comp. I do have chromo's to go in one day but I have 4 more sets of stds :-)

I don't believe there's any need for Cromo semifloat axles at all, ever. There isn't sufficient strength upgrade.

I don't believe there's any need for Cro-mo rear axles with 31's.

I haven't seen a rear axle break at 31"

I agree that it's always important to get off the throttle if the car starts to hop.

Steve.

The splines twist but i havent broken one 6-7 years of driving on 32"s and when i did break one that was on 34" tyres doing something completely stupid.

i've broken 2 rear R&P sets. one shattered the pinion bearing, the other stripped about 5 teeth, stock rear axles are fine. that said, ive just bought HD rear axles to fit as im fitting 4.6 gears, rear airlocker and all new bearings and figured anything outside the diff breaks it can be flat towed. break a rear axle and you're f**ked. and i dont have the skill to do a floater kit...

Most aftermarket gear ratios for sierra diffs seem rubbish quality
