Hi all,


I haven't posted here in more than a while, and I'm sure you've all seen questions and opinions on Jim's on 31's.

So here I go.

I happened to have some 31x10.5 R15 Bighorns lying around, so in my state of boredom I've begun to fit them to the Jim.
- As it stands, the Jimny has no modifications to the suspension or any body lift.
- I have completed a virtual lift in the front and rear allowing the tyres to clear with ease when straight with even spring compression

I'd like to keep the body as stock as possible, and I'd like to try and fit the 31's at stock ride height.
- Currently the tyres scrub at full lock on the firewall
- Tyres will scrub on front body mount under any compression

My thoughts on having these tyres fit scrub constantly are so far limited to:
- Bump stop spacing
- Body lift (not desirable)
- Suspension lift (again, not really desirable)
- Hacking the firewall ( :roll: )
- Cutting and re-welding the front body mount and moving the front diff forward (unsure on legalities in QLD for resale)

So because I know there are a few minds on here that know a whole lot more about cars than I do, I thought I'd ask for any possible help or suggestions on how I could fit this rubber at stock ride height but I'm pretty sure it's going to involve just a little bit of work.

(I also know about gearing, but I'm not super worried at the moment - I have a sierra t-case with 4.18 reduction in the shed if need be.)

I did a bit of a search too, had a look at Monley's old Jim etc. but most Jim's are rocking some suspension or body lift.

have a search in the rigs section for posts by "Smiffkid" - IIRC he fitted 31s to a stock jimny (although with little regard for the bodywork). Might give some ideas though...

Thanks for the suggestion, had a bit of a search and as far as I can see both his Jim's are running suspension lift

I'll keep digging but I think I'm limited in my options and a suspension lift will probably be in order.

Lift shouldnt alter it if he didnt extend the bumpstops,
chop chop chop..

its so refreshing to see someone wanting to keep the lift low

Yeah, taken out of context it would appear so, but I'm pretty sure he's running body lift (mentioned the page before?) which would help with the firewall clearance issues - unsure on how he cleared the front body mount though.

If I run bumpstop extensions I'll definately get some longer shocks, I don't know too much about the coils though. I'm guessing by that (coil retainers) you think they'd detach at full flex or something? I'm still learning! :oops:
I'd imagine if they didn't detach they'd probably be the limiting factor in the amount of fully sick flex I'd get? (After the swaybar)

Might have to PM smiffkid and monley to get them to weigh in with their opinions as they seem to pop up every time Jimny's are mentioned

Yea mate
I ran 31x10.5s on both 15x8-22 and 15x7-12 rims
My guards on the front where chopped to the little fold
I think its 30mm all up
Rears I cut the same but I removed the inner metal guard which is spot welded on

Ran a 50 mm body life with standard spring and ran 80mm tough dog shocks for travel
Still sat low enough that it drove great n looked the part but had enough room to flex
If I did it again in run 60mm soft springs bigger bump stops and no body lift

I have done essentially the same regarding the guards - front and rears chopped to lip, inner guard removed from rear, substantial chop from front inner guards.

Did you have any scrubbing issues with the front body mount as a BL wouldn't change the clearance there?

In order for me to clear the firewall without BL and excessive hammering I might redrill the rear mount for the radius arms (15mm is the limit I believe), but this will just cause more issues with the front body mount.
I may also have to invest in some offset rims.

Mine never rubbed on body mount on both the jimny but could be different offsets
Our jimny with the massive lift has got the front diff moved forward 15mm made a good difference
But some sort of lift just helps free everything up that much better

If you're already thinking rims, would going to an offset 16" rim and running a skinnier tyre perhaps be the answer? Rather than a 15" rim and 31x10.5" tyre, run a 245/75r16, which measures the same as a 31" in height but only 9.6" wide... or a 235/85r16 which measures roughly 9.25" wide and 31.7" tall.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm currently looking for some neg offset rims to check clearance.

I think you'd be on the money there Alien, narrower tyres would certainly help with the front mount scrub although I'm looking to use a set of tyres that I already have - but it is definitely good advice for anyone looking at purchasing larger diameter tyres for a stock height Jim.
I probably wouldn't recommend anything over 29" (maybe 30") at a guess to avoid scrub on the firewall with standard rims and diff position.

-25 offset seems to be the go so I'll be keeping my eyes peeled.

I have 245/75/16 tyres on -15 rims and it all works well with bugger all scrubbing. Have lots done to the suspension however.

Rear doesn't scrub at all and on the front the only place it touches is near the headlight
