Post subject:  GV tyre sizes

Has anyone with a 2" suspension lift only, no body lift, on a Grand Vitara tried fitting any of the following sized tyres, and if so what was the result regarding fouling clearances.

255/65, 245/70, 255/60, 245/65, 235/70, 225/75

What year GV?

I'm running 2 inch lift with 235/70/16 Toyo AT's on a '98

They rub slightly on the chassis on the front at full lock (got worse since I fitted camber bolts)

I think ODA1 is running 225/75 Cooper's on his.

Anything wider or taller would require going to town on the suspension, body or both IMO.

Mine is a '98 also.

235/70 is +6.8% (gearing & speedo) over std 235/60
225/75 is +8%

255/60 is only +3.5%
245/65 is only +5.3%

3.5% or 5.3% is more appealing than 6.8% or 8%

Only trouble is that more height (radius) is easier to fit than more width for the following reason:-

If the front wheels are at 45 degrees on full lock, then an extra inch of diameter, (half inch of radius) would have the same effect as a half inch of extra width, but I don't think full lock is that much, so an extra inch of diameter (half inch of radius) is easier to accommodate than a half inch of width, because at less that 45 degrees the side-wall is more parallel to the chassis, and the tread surface is more perpendicular.
(over 45 degrees and the width becomes easier to accommodate than the radius)

This is obviously why the thinner /70s & /75s are the choice. Bummer, I didn't really want that much change in gearing.

I have camber bolts fitted also. Does the front or rear of the tyre rub on the chassis? Any other concerns with 235/70s?

I could live with a little less lock, so I am wondering if it is possible to fit stops like on non IFS 4X4s.

Rear...... I think.....will have to have a look.

235/70's rubbed a bit in the rear wheel arches at full suspension compression with stock suspension, not really a problem now though.

Would take a bit of engineering, would be easier to just to let off a bit off lock when you hear them rub.

The other thing to look at is can you get the tire you want in some of those wider sizes. 235/70's and 225/75's seem to be fairly common, don't know about the others.

Yes, availability is something else.

As no-one else has posted I am guessing that 225/75 & 235/70 are the only ones. As the 235/70 has the bigger footprint and the smaller gear altering effect, that will have to be my choice.

I run 225 75's on mine with a 2" suspension lift. (goodyear wrangler atr) They rub slightly on full lock in the front, no other issues that I have found and we have put her through some pretty rough terrain since fitting them. 8)

Thanks zook37. According to my chart, it should be + 8% which is what you have got.

I would still like to hear from someone who has used 225/75s AND 235/70s on the same vehicle in soft sand, and hear their opinion on which one has better flotation when deflated.
