Post subject:  What's happening to my Jimny?

Hey all -
So the Jimny has had this problem on two occasions in the last few weeks, although with my limited technical knowledge, I am not sure what it is.
When driving, the revs will all of a sudden become super eratic, and the throttle is essentially unresponsive. If I pull over, turn off the engine for a moment and then restart, all is ok (until it happens again a short while later).
As I said, I have limited technical knowledge, however to me it feels as though it could be an AFM or other sensor issue? Another suggestion was vacuum lines?

I managed to record a short video of it happening, check it out here -

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks heaps guys!!

Wow that's weird!!

Is a coil pack playing up and you're dropping a cylinder then getting it back? (Doubt it though as that looks insanely erratic rather than a loss of power).

The power pretty much disappears completely. The car doesn't jolt or anything in relation to the change in revs, but it is just as though the accelerator doesn't really do anything.

looks like an issue with what ever the tacho is wired to. I'm guessing its the coil packs. there losing power making the tach lose signal, making it miss like mad and the tach jump around...

That sounds like a good theory, Gromet. So by restarting the car, it seems to be ok. Does this sound like what would happen with the coil?

The other thing I should mention - the car has a belt squeal upon start up - the fan belt seems ok, so I thought it could possibly be the alternator trying to work too hard upon start up, and slipping on the belt. The reason I think this is that the alternator got a bit dirty after a water crossing, and seemed a little dodgy after that.
I mention this as when the problem mentioned above happens, the only light that will flicker on is the alternator light....

That's what someone else I spoke to suggested, Alien. Will check that out ASAP.

In case anyone has the same issue - we replaced the crank angle sensor, and a few weeks later, all still going strong.
