I'd only engage them when sitting still. The Jimny transfer has a syncro so when you put it into 4wd at speed it brings the front tailshaft and diff components up to speed before it locks the hubs.
You could just put a switch inline with the wire from the 4wd switch on the transfer. That way putting it in 4wd would automatically lock the hubs and it would leave the whole computer system intact which is handy. Driving through some scrub I ripped one of the vacuum lines off. I immediately knew what the problem was (and indeed, that I had no 4wd) because of the flashing 4wd light.
Your 4wd light would be totally accurate too, you wouldn't forget that you unlocked the hubs.
