G'day everyone.
I was doing some reading on road legal requirements of cars. It seems if the overall roof height is more then 50mm higer police can request you get a lane change test. Has anyone taken a jimny through a lane change test in WA? If so how do they perform? I'm looking at buying a 4x4 pretty soon and the jimny is on my list. I'm not looking particularly for a heavily modified jimny but there are some good looking cars on the market that have lift and wheel mods. I would hate to buy a car that had been modified, be hassled by the cops and not be able to pass a lane change test. The car I'm looking at today has a 4" lift kit, and 30" set of rollers.
Any know how would be appreciated :)

That combination would not be legal in Victoria.

I don't think that combo would be legal anywhere except NT under any curcumstances.

In any case, there's no need to run so much lift for 30's.

Engineering a lifted 4wd in WA now is ridiculously difficult. Unfortunately you're just better off having bolt on mods and copping a Yellow sticker if that's the case... Just hope that the mods don't contribute to a crash cos you won't be covered by your 3rd Party (Rego).

Thanks for the replies. Yeah the height was a little up there, moved around the corners a bit. I think I will just look for a standard jimny, that way I can stick to legal mods. I just don't have the time to screw round with RWCs. There seem to be a few low km jimnys less then 6 years old for 10-15k. Probable a better option

you could cheat and get adjustable dampening shocks and dial them right up, so their stiff for a lane change test.

99% of modded zooks are illegal on w.a. roads best of just sensibly modding or buying one and clear it with your insurance. Ive been driving 32"s daily for 6-7 years with no issues. Rac had no dramas insuring the missus vitara with 30.7" tyres and 50mm lift

Insurance companies are happy to take your money - however if one of the mods is the cause of the crash they'll argue the car was illegally modified and hence not insured. If in that crash (where a mod caused it) you kill someone - your 3rd party accident insurance is void and you'll be up on criminal charges...

Keeping in mind larger tyres = decreased braking capacity it's an easy argument to make that you'd have been able to stop sooner and avoid a crash had you had stock tyres... etc etc.

Just worth considering is all.

i think its important to note on low traction surfaces better breaking performance can be achieved with wider tyres (and to an extent taller ones too)

Oh absolutely - but its still long a long bow to draw to say "you had less braking capacity therefore insurance is void"...

Especially if they have made a note and said the tyres were approved and they happy to keep insuring you

I'm referring more to the 3rd party side of things (the public liability/ indemnity insurance in your rego) than the additional insurance you pay for to cover damages.

I dont think it would be that much of an issue to be honest they normally dont even look at the car causing the accident if they are only claiming 3rd party.
At least in w.a. ive never heard of this happening

They look when there's a serious injury or fatality... the bloke who engineered my car did most of his work as forensic investigation on that sort of crash, looking for the cause / failures from a mechanical / engineering point of view. Joe's big crash for instance - they'd have gone over those to see what happened for sure.

Yeah i would hope so if there was a serious incident but minor stuff even comprehensive they just make u get 3 quotes and make there decision to fix it or not. Repairs on my lwb came to $6000 and they still elected to repair it rather than write it off. Just had to get panel beater quotes no questions asked
