I have been looking for these for a while now wanting to put them in my LJ. I discovered through another post some available albeit at a hi price (well I think so)

I was wondering if anyone has come across any other 7" LED's

Yes there is another brand called J.W. Speaker these are even more expensive.

There are cheaper Chinese copies.

Just go to the wreckers and look for a pair of old style 7" lights that take bulbs and put leds in?

I was hoping to find some like the bar lights but not at 400 bucks

Might just stick to the ol faithfuls as it doesnt get much night work. Doesnt get much work fullstop.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any H4 LED globe replacement with anything like the output of a normal halogen globe. Happy to stand corrected though.

From what I've seen of drop in LED globes with the "H" lamp base, I reckon they would screw with the light pattern worse than HID.

I'd like to put LED 7" inserts in the Defender, but at this stage quality, approved units are still far too $$$ for me.

They have got decent H4 LED globes now, this is relativly new 50W, not sure about high beam distance though. May be ok for low beam but its output is 1/4 to half of what a Halogen would put out.

would these doo, you can get 90wat for double the price but surely 70 wat is enough?

Er, Gecko, you do realise the OP (and I ) are talking about legal H4 headlight replacement/high low beam?

Those 7" driving lights aren't going to pass for a headlight, and aren't even very efficient.

The H4 globe you posted isn't a high/low beam globe, so isn't suitable for a single 7" headlight. The commercially available 7" headlights run at least two separate emitters to cover high beam and low beam. I don't believe that this is readily achievable with an LED H4 globe.

Whilst the globes might be interesting to experiment with, I think we're a while to seeing viable led replacement headlights that are affordable - the optics required are very specific and two separate emitters are required.

Post subject:  Re: 7" LED headlights

I know what you mean by optics, standard light housings arnt very efficiant for them. These H4 replacements usually have one focused LED with Lens for high beam at top, side LED's that dim for normal beam and go full output for High Beam or two separate circuits.

There are these 174Lumen Low Beam 1057 High tested by customer also said there very focused but not blinding :?:

But i gather these are what you are look for. I have seen cheap chinese 7" headlights but all they have in them are one of these H4 globes.

At 174 lumen I don't imagine they'd be "blinding"- I have a single AA head torch that puts out more than that. I'm looking for an upgrade for a halogen globe.

Post subject:  Re: 7" LED headlights

Even 174 lumens can be distracting when not focused correctly (downwards), looks like those are. It would be interesting to see what readings you would get at the actual focal point of the beam instead of up against the lens.

I'm using a similar LED system which have been great.

The key is to get a LED globe that has the LED chip positioned where the normal halogen globe filament would sit. This allows the headlight reflectors to do their job of focusing the beam correctly, which this type does. Unlike those retro fitted HID's in normal headlight which pi$$ everyone off and dangerous as hell!

thanks all for your input and not getting off track

Some good infor

As stated I am chasing a 7" replacement and was really looking for some sealed version not a H4 style

Looks like I'll have to wait a while til the prices get to something normal that a zook op can afford

This not actually possible, and for the same reason that HIDs in normal headlamps pi$$ everybody off - the light sources are different, and require different optics to be effective.

Post subject:  Re: 7" LED headlights

Yes it is actually possible because I have one in front of me and have tested it.............The LED H4 headlight replacement chip positioned in exactly the same spot, and faces the same way as the halogen filament (as you can see in the pic) It also only projects light in the right direction in order for it to bounce off the reflector/s at the correct spot, as the halogen would. I have tested this and using a headlight height adjustment board, the light is focused correctly, has the correct pattern and not blinding. You can see the LED chip and halogen filament with reflector will only shine light in the right direction, up in this case the way the globes are sitting. Same goes for the high beam side of things.

Image

You cant compare this with HID globe as they have no reflector or shielding, and rely totally on the headlight housing reflectors and lens to do all the work. So putting these globes in a standard halogen type headlight housing wont work. Also the LED max output is 1800 lumens, compared the output of a average HID headlight globe which is around 3300 lumens.

Post subject:  Re: 7" LED headlights

First - that's a D2S HID globe, get a D2R and then tell me about HID globes not having shielding.

Second - take a closer look at that H4 globe - how many filaments do you see? How many LED chips on the replacement? And please don't tell me there's a second one on the other side - the fact that it's not on this side means there's no light coming this way from it, as happens when the H4 high beam is on.

Now look a little more closely at the position of that LED chip - "laterally" it's not mounted on the central axis of the globe, and it is also closer to the base than the low beam filament position of the H4 globe, which means it does NOT sit at the same point in the lamps optics.

Next - go do your research on what happens when the light source is not at the focal point of the reflector - which is what will happen when you install the LED globe in an H4 lamp housing...

By the way - thanks for the pictures - it makes it very easy to get my point across - the globes are visibly different.

Post subject:  Re: 7" LED headlights

As I explained if you read my post, the projected light onto the headlight adjustment/pattern board was spot on, only difference it had a much whiter light. Same beam pattern, no light spill and stayed within the legal pattern spread limit exactly. We can all post part numbers, but fact is that the light was not blinding, stayed within the legal pattern and spread requirements. And with the high beam, the actual real world result was a 'high beam' being projected. The purpose of high beam is to throw as much light as possible, and it does. In my dealings with people fitting HID's to their halogen housings, I have never seen one of them use a shielded HID globe, in my experience. My burnt retinas also know that a lot of them aren't shielded when I pass them on the road. They go to Supercheap or Jaycay, buy the kit and bang them straight in. So after all that, the end real world result is that it is 'possible'.

None of it bothers me as I only have lights cos they won't give me a pink slip without them - I never drive at night and don't get car damage from animal strikes :deadhorse:

Try reading my post - your LED globe source(s) not only have a different radiation pattern, but are in different positions to those in an H4 globe - which means it WILL NOT, CAN NOT match the optics - it may come close, but it's a compromise, and a compromise always results is a lower standard.

So it is possible. Not perfect.............but possible!

Possible -

1. able to be done or achieved.
synonyms: feasible, able to be done, practicable, viable, within the bounds/realms of possibility, attainable, achievable, realizable, within reach, workable, manageable

The ones I posted are a sealed 7" unit
In the range of around $375, depending on how poorly our dollar is going

Pair of LED projector lights look pretty good.

I have seen H4 halogen 7" round lights CHEAP eg 50 each wonder how these will go with a LED globe in it since all the light is focused through the lens.

Why would you go for them?
Gecko Posted up the better quality ones

Because they are sealed, cheap, easy to fit and bright enough for what I want

The 7" are sealed, I've said that already and are a direct fit for existing 7"

Those ones you linked will piss every single car off, it's a spotlight design not a head light, if you run it the very first cop to see you at night will pull you up and sticker you
