I was planning to use some low range 4.57 diff gears in my sierra but am worried about rear axle strength and have basically been given a set of hilux diffs with alot of spare axles and 4.55 centres and due to my limited funds and the hilux strength am considering would the 0.02 difference cause to many problems?

I mostly drive rocks sandy dirt and gravel roads with it in 4wd

The 0.02 difference wont matter, there's probably a greater difference in the size of your tyres front to rear anyway.

Hilux rear diff in a Sierra doesn't really work. A hiluxes rear diff is centred where as a Sierra diff is offset to the drivers side. A local guy here put Hilux diffs in his Sierra and it's basically undriveable because of the tailshaft vibrations.

Sell the Lux diffs and get a fully floating axle kit for your sierra diff, that will be virtually indestructible.

Agree with Sideways, the 0.02 difference (4.57 vs 4.55) wont make much difference.
On a 31" tyre your'e talking approx 3.5 mm difference in diam.

What have you done to the sierra front?
What tyres, engine and gearing combo are you running that you need a hilux rear diff for?
Are Trying to run a wt front, with hilux rear with vit engine, gearbox and transfer?



The 1.3 sierra rear diff holds up pretty to a lot of hate, they don't get eaten that often.

You will also have issues if you require a spare, unless you find the rare 6 stud suzuki stuff

Re gearing sierra diffs properly can be quite expensive

Unless there is more info required than provided, it seems like a pointless exercise

ok fair point by all and thanks for your opinions and advise

I did think the difference was nearly nothing and thought myself that worn or miss matched tyres would cause just as much a problem.

firstly I have a lwb sierra and I was lead to believe due to the longer rear tail shaft the vibrations would be limited maybe my info is incorrect...

I thought joeblow was not making them any longer and I cant see the hilux gear selling for anything near what I would need for custom axles etc

fair point jdk81 I was on my phone when I had a brain storm moment.

my setup currently is 84 lwb sierra with vit p/s ruf wt diffs with chromo front axles lwb vit brakes and auto front locker and the rear is open stock axles disc brakes at nt spacing 1.6 carb sierra 1.3 5 speed 4.1 sierra transfer and 31's on road and 33's offroad. I know the diff can be beat on im just concerned for how long I can do that before it bites me back and the main reason is I have 6 rear axles for the hilux and none for the sierra

future plans are for a 1.6 efi aw4 with both transfers (vit to sierra) with built hilux diffs (front and rear) coils or coilovers and 35's I know that sierra diffs hold up to 35's but im not comfortable locking the rear hitting the loud pedal to much and I know I can do that with out issue with the hilux gear on 35's

if I had to I would redrill either of the diffs to match stud patterns.

I have the sierra 4.57 gears already before I sell them I just was curious as to if I could perform this for a few reasons;
1. will it fit and work as required i.e no vibrations etc
2. i will be moving house in 8-12 months and don't want to get half way through the conversion only to have to pack it all up and move and then pick up where I left off
3. doing just the rear for now should be quickish and keep me out on the tracks.

For your list of future mods , seems the hilux Diffs would be a lot of work and the fronts would be no reall gain over the sierra cromos, without going after market c/v's ect. a vit based floater would be worth contemplation, also a lot of work but you get the added benifet/ strength of the floating axels. Also can be done while keeping your car on the tracks.

The times you use the front diff will be respectively low traction. The bind would slip easily.

Greater differences have been used and worked.
