Post subject:  SE420 or SV420 chassis?
Hi guys


I just bought a 97 SWB, 2L 4 cyl vitara. Im just wondering how do you tell if its a SE420 or the SV420 wide body? can you tell just by looking at the chassis?

Just a guess , but it would be on the plate under the bonnet .

I looked at the plate under the bonnet but it made no mention of the chassis number.

i was a suzuki salesman for 5 years and there should be a compliance plate in green white or silver with black writing on it somewhere on the car..

it will have SE420 or SV420 on the plate and thats how you will tell what one it is..

they sometimes hide the plates under the door once you open it or even in the boot under the spare tyre..

have a really good look cause it will be there but might be hard to find

I searched under the rear tire, in the boot and under the doors. All i could find was the plate in the engine bay. The vin number is JSAETA51C00103506 if that helps.

i thinkits SE420 from the VIN number..

thats how they search parts by the vin so 90% chance its the SE model

post a pic, but if it has a DOHC engine & the body flares etc & the SV front clip... it's an SV.

does it have 16" wheels, does it have cup holders? if it's a manual it will have a hydraulic clutch... i can go on, but a pic will answer it for sure.

Doesn't 2 litre automatically equal SV? Or was there a rare unicorn late SE model with the bigger motor?

hmmm.. just for the heck of it, I ran the VIN posted (cut and paste method) through an Internet VIN decoder and came up with an error...

Perhaps the VIN system is not internationally universal... Interesting.

Give the man a medal. The SE series were all 1.6 litre except for a very few 1.3 engined 1989 Sidekicks (SE413), and the diesel engined versions.

If it's a 2.0 it's either SV, SQ or JB.

The VIN standard doesn't specify a great deal, it requires it to be a specific length (16 or 17 digits) and to start with a standard designation for the manufacturer and country of manufacture the rest is a vehicle description followed by a serial number, the vehicle description and serial number are a defined length but the format is manufacturer specific, in the case of Suzuki they vary from model to model. In the US there is a legal requirement for the VIN to be filled in in a specific manner but it doesn't apply elsewhere. The Suzuki parts database is more specific:

It has 16 inch wheels and two cup holders inbetween the front seat. The reason im asking this is because i know a guy who is selling a bullbar which was originally on a SV620. I'm hoping that if my car is a SV420 then the mountings should be the same....

I was told that the estate bullbars wont fit on a short wheel base because they are wider..... but I've seen pictures of the SV620 mountings and they look identical to mine. But then again that could just be my untrained eye!

As far as I'm aware the front ends on the SV series chassis are identical, so it should fit. It won't fit the SE SWB, but it should fit the SV SWB - I did a part lookup on the "front bumper member", which is the steel reinforcement that sits under the plastic - it's the same part for both the SV420 & SV620 - so if the bulbar mounts to the bumper mounts, it should fit.

I just went and had a look at the V6 and the front ends were both the same. However the V6 had extra brackets welded to the chassis in order to make the bullbar fit. After all the effort of researching the chassis differences between the lwb and the swb and i find out its the wrong bullbar! lol. I bought the bullbar anyway and I'm going to weld some brackets to my car this weekend.
