Diesel / Petrol / Gas for economy?
I have some doubts about people buying petrol Cruisers and putting them on gas and thinking it's better fuel economy.
Has anyone actaully done it, and is it worth it?
How much does it cost to get the gas conversion done? Maybe $3000?
but then, is Gas that much cheaper? and how much do you use compared to Petrol?
For example, if you use double the amount of Gas, there's no point eh?
Comments and input welcome

Steve we got the 105 done when we got it 3years ago and with all the trips we have done in it to date the conversion cost of $1000 after we go the rebate back now has paid for it self, was well worth it gas today 50cents a lt we use more than it should at 30lt per 100k's and that is about 8lt per 100 to much, the reason is the conversion we did was the basic 1 and not the injected system that Lula has on her 80 series now.
If you are not doing the big K's you would more than likley be waiting a long time to get the savings.
If you work on 25lt per 100k's gas and at the price of Deisel it would work out cheaper after the intial cost was recouped
25lt per 100k's @ 50 cents on Gas under half the cost of Diesel @ $1.20 per ltit would equate to around 10-12lt per 100k's about the same as on Diesel. BUT wait there is more saving to be had.
With Gas you do have the benift of less oil changes instead of every 5000k you can go to 10.000k without a problem and the oil will still be clean as there is no carbons being sent back into the oil as gas is cleaner.
Another saving it Plugs 60-70 thow I do mine around 50.000 and the engine stays cleaner internal so apart from the Gas saving that ends up about the same as on Diesel where you have alot more cost every service, I will stick with Gas.

i have seen a big difference with gas/petrol and straight gas too. Friends had an RB20 patrol on gas/petrol and a TB42 on straight gas tuned for it.
the TB42 went heaps bettter and used less. RB30 was around 30L/100 vs 22-25 in the TB42.

yep straight gas is the way to go, its better in so many ways
but depending on what you want to do Diesel can also be very good, still got the torque for towing and loping around on the highway

i have gas injection on a p38 range (wifes daily driver) rover. went from using about $110-$130 a week in petrol to $60-$75 a week in gas to do the same amount of k's.
cant tell the difference on gas to petrol even with a car on a trailer on the back. will sit on 100 no worries. best thing we every did!
no let the flaming begin of the rover

How much does it cost in lost oil every week?
Is it just on gas and no petrol? and how far will it go on gas? Do you ever need to swap it over to petrol?

bout 3 or 4 years ago my first GQ Patrol was dual fuel with an rb30 3.0 litre (VL commodore) motor in it. With 33's on it, it was pretty gutless at the best of times, but the gas ran beuatiful in it. It used to cost about $40 to fill it up and I used to get around 400 - 450km's a tank in it. It ran no better on petrol. Was a bit of a shock when I bought my 4.2 litre GQ and filled it up for the 1st time. $120 later and used to get roughly the same sort of mileage.

With the Gas/Diesel they do say the advantage is extra power but there is no real gain in the consumption side of thing.
So it would work out cheaper to chip it and get the extra power and pick up some benifits with the comsumption side also.
On petrol as said save on
$$per 100k
Servicing
Cleaner Internal on the motor.

only one or two drops a night so far hope it stays like that.
it's duel fuel, starts on petrol and switch over to gas when its warm enough all buy it self. somthing to do with the injectors need to be a set temp or they freeze up. we get 250-300 k's around town and 300-350 k's on the hwy out of about 65ltrs. we only have a small donnut tank where the spare wheel was.
never need to turn it over to petrol unless it runs out of gas.

There is a reduction in fuel consumption (however small) as the gas promotes a more conplete burn of the diesel. It may not be much but still every bit helps. It also keeps the engine cleaner, as with gas/petrol.

Just 4 U steve these are the figures off Lula's 80 Series Cruiser on Gas.
First figures are in for the Gas and it still needs to go back for it's 1000k tune 93 Lt = 400k's
23.25 Lt Per 100 K's
4.3 K's per 1 Lt
GAS 50 Cents per 4.3k's or $ 11.62 per 100K's or Around $ 120 per 1000K's
Her old Vitara 10 lt per 100k's @ $1.20 per Lt 1000k's $120
Now that is good for a Cruiser on Gas to cost as much as a Vitara on Petrol Per 1000k's
On top of that she has the saving of services every 10,000k's
Plugs every 50-60,000k's
Won't take long at that for her to recoupe her $1000 out lay.
Now that is cheaper to run than a Deisel Cruiser to run.

the guy that did my rover does the gas conversion on diesels as well, it changes the whole way the diesel burns he told me (i was going to do it on my lux but work dried up so i had to sell it), you can get so much more power out of the diesel if you run less diesel and more gas but you can cause damage to the engine if you really push it. he said think of it like running nitros all the time with out building the engine right. that is why most of the guys only say there is a little gain in power. its tuned down using less gas more diesel.
he also told me most people he does it for don't do the diesel/ gas for econ they do it for the extra power and the plus is it ends up costing you a little less to drive how you did before
