No - Just keep your foot off the brake as much as possible and you will get good mileage out of most cars.

You probably won't get many replies mate as its well known that they suck juice like there is no tomorrow.

Stock standard they aren't too bad as per Tony's figure above. Soon as you start modifying them with anything that screws with the aerodynamics (bigger/wider tyres, more lift, roof racks, spotties, bullbar, awning etc etc) economy goes out the window.

I'm getting anywhere from 300 - 450km from a tank depending on what I'm doing (on-road/offroad/thrashing it or driving sedately etc). I'd need to be driving down hill an awful lot with a gale force wind behind me to get anything approaching 500km to the tank.

Ok thanks guys I've been getting about 350-400kms out of a tank so I guess that's about average. Cheers

Fix it :)

I pissed off the car gods when I bought a BT50 and it cost me dearly. The suzis may like a drink themselves but at least they won't drive you too drink.

my young fella reckons he's getting 10l to 100klm .
2.5 man on 98 about 85% hwy driving ( 2" lift and a low alloy bar

I find a get better economy on 98 and its not happy on 91 wouldn't use less than 95 if possible. If you do things like snorkle, exhaust, O2 sensors, air filter, flush fuel system, headers everything todo with fuel and air delivery and exit you can get 10L/100km with a modded GV. Fully modded to excess I get around 12L/100km

Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

Yeah I've been running 95 but might try 98 I've got plans for an exhaust system and extractors in the future so hopefully I can get better fuel economy. As for air I've got the snorkel with a k&n filter so that's really the best I can do with that?

Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

yea thats about it. Snorkel, high flow air filter, good spark plugs, 98 oct fuel, new O2 sensors, Extractors, high flow cat, 2.25/2.5in exhaust, then diff gears to match tyres. thats about it as far as mods to attempt to improve economy. then basic oil and filter changes also help.

Wheres the best place to find diff gears and what ratio would I need for a manual?

Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

depends what size tyre you are running. if you want lower low and lower than stock you'll need 5.12s or for a mild change to match up to a 31 go for 4.8s out of an auto gv. your current will be 4.3. check people wrecking gvs for 4.8s or vits for 5.12s. you will need 12 bolt rear crown wheel. search on here it's all been done before

Can you change the different ranges like high instead of low or does changing the crown affect both high and low?

ring and pinion affect the final drive regardless. if you want to change only high or low it would need to be in the transfer case.

What Sco-tie Said, but also check out this pages to find a solution that works for your desired diff/tyre combo, the available GV ratios are all on the pages.

Interesting link, first time I've seen that ratios info. Makes we wish I had really waited a bit longer and found an 03 model XL7 however. 4.3x diff ratios for the auto models combined with the 5spd trans would be glorious for running bigger rubber. I'd almost put up with the munted front headlights for that

Just put a bull bar (ECB ali one) and spotlights on and today did our usual shopping trip to town - 160ks total 110ks flat bitumen the rest a mixture of dirt, gravel and rough track - air con on one way - 16.5 lts Same as before the bull bar.

Will I be alright running 31s with stock gearing? It's only going to be for offroad this winter so I'm not worried about power loss onroad

Author:  Sco-tie [ Thu Apr 09, 2015 10:00 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

Yes you will be fine Im guessing they are going to be 245/75/16 so 30.5in plenty have done it on stock gearing. It will be easier if you have a manual for on road and easier in an auto off road. otherwise you'll need some clutch slippage.

What about 235 85 16? (31.7")

Firstly good luck fitting them. Not sure what your set up has bit a BL is needed and offset rims ri clear the chassis and cross member then you will break lots. And then I would definitely recommend gears

Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

Ok I'll just stick with the 245 75 then. I'm running 2" lift and installing 1" body soon.

Don't bother with a 1in bl.

Post subject:  Re: 2.5l v6 grand vitara fuel usage

Don't need a BL to fit 245/75/16s to the GV.

add some coil spacers and extended bumpstops and just do some panel beating of the inner guards.
