My advise is always to get one that's standard. They are always better priced when they're not modified and it's pretty easy to tell if a standard Jimny has been abused.
Just check the front and rear arm mounts on the chassis, they'll be bent and buckled if they've done any serious off road work. Other then that just the usual look for rust and oil leaks.
If you get something standard you can get a new set of springs and shocks for $700-$800 and a full set of 215/75 R15 mud tyres for about the same money. That's pretty much all you need for a fun little daily driver/weekend warrior.
