So I have almost completed my custom MDF drawers in the back of my Jimny. I am wondering what ideas people have for keeping the drawers rattling around. It is impossible to perfectly adjust the rails so that there is absolutely no horizontal and vertical play in the drawers. Obviously driving offroad causes the drawers to rattle around alot, not while they are fully loaded but I want them to be perfectly quiet.

I have not decided on handles and locks yet.

Currently I am thinking of using a piece of foam or rubber on the back, above and to the sides of each drawer so that it is just thick enough to add significant pressure in all three dimensions at the point in which the drawer is fully closed.

I figure someone must have a better idea!

I have a draw which was professionally built by ORS or at least the shell was. No movement in the runners and no rattles. I think it depends on what you are using for runners. If you just got some draw runners from Bunnings there is not much you will be able to do. Offroad draws use heavier duty runners with tighter tolerances.

They are heavy duty runners rated to over 200kg but there is a very slight amount of vertical play that manifests as a rattle if the drawers are not loaded. I am yet to see drawer runners without this slight vertical play (when the drawers were open and empty) and I assumed it was because if it were proper snug then even a very slight difference in alignment would then add a large amount of friction to the slide mechanism. I guessed that some runners must have some kind of built in stopper that holds it solid once fully closed or another equivalent mechanism external to the runners or perhaps incorporated into the locking mechanism. Anyone have any suggestions other than turn up the stereo or buy commercial product?

I have never taken a close look at mine but they may have a locking position when closed. They are commercial 4WD runners. Sorry I can't help with any more info myself.

I checked my runners today and they are firm all the way to full extension. Absolutely no movement in any position. No locking mechanism of any type just very close tolerances. That's not a bad price given the quality of the product and the amount of work that goes into doing it yourself. Would go down that route if I were to do it again. I would probably do my own custom frame again and have them make up individual drawer units to size to be bolted in at the end.
