Fellow Zookers!

Im now looking to get myself another zook again, this time to do a few mods to it. My last one was an SJ80 coily that was bog stock. with the stock tyres on it i use to travel to the beach which was around 2 hours away at 100 fairly well.

Will a Sierra on 31's with transfer gears do 100km on the highway? and for how long? Really sluggish to get upto speed or decent?

Most of the places i go 4wding/camping to are around 2-3 hours away. I really want to get a sierra but dont want to do a 1.6 swap straight away. How can i expect to go in the 1.3?

The other option i have is a vitara on 31's with some gears, which would do 100k easy enough.

My other thought was I have to drive to Lithgow from Melbourne in September, so thats a 1000km drive or so i will have to make.

Anyone around Pakenham who has a sierra with this sort of setup willing to take me for a spin? ^_^

not really rear pakenham, but if you can get to Noble Park one night after 4pm, I can take you for a bit of a cruise..

my old 1.3 was very wornout but i regularly drove 1000km days in 45deg heat.
and i could mostly cruse at 100 however it was much more relaxed at 90.
i tow a trailer fairly often as well and i just got used to 5000revs in third. it didn't
seem to hurt the motor as it did well over 300000ks i have just swapped in a 1.6
but the 1.3 was still working fine.
89 hard top with 31" extremes 6.5gears and lots of bodgy stuff. oh and aircon.

My zook used to do 120 in 5th along the freeway. Extractors, on 31's with 6.5 transfer gears (20% lower high range I believe). It may have also been running on the rich side (12L/100km, backfires a bit), the carby has always played up somewhat.

It depends on the condition of you engine. That engine was in good nick (127k when I got it, pulled it apart to replace a cracked piston and it was mechanically A1).

My current motor is completely gutless, but it has pretty major head issues.

Time to get a G13B DOHC motor

Zachius, my old SJ80 used to do 120, but god it was scary so i didnt take over 110. Seemed as soon as i went over about 112km it went from decent drive to horrible. Seemed like that was its limit

My zook is:

1991 SWB Soft-top.
TG 6.5's
Stock 3.7 ratio diffs (rear mini-spool)
Stock 1.3L with 5-speed
Standard intake and exhaust
Maxxis Bighorn 31's (on 15x8's) at 25psi

On a FLAT road mine will sit on 100 with around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle without any real problem at all (at about 3900rpm). On a good flat road it will hold 110 at 3/4 to full throttle with a small headwind with no real dramas too. Mine seems to be OK for a stock 1.3L!

Big hills will slow it down to 80 in 3rd gear while revving it's tits off - but it never really goes any slower than that.

Fitting the 6.5's was the best thing I have done to make it work on the highway. The 31's work great with the 6.5's IMHO!

ps - the speeds quoted are GPS readings. My speedo reads 10kmh lower than it should with my current setup (i.e. 90 on the speedo = 100 on the GPS)

my car is 3.7 diffs 6.5 trans gears 31's and is doing 100kph at 3400 revs, checked by GPS.

shep, 3400RPM@100k sounds like a low RPM for your setup?

There is a gearing calculator around the net somewhere - has anyone here done the sums for our gear?

In regards to my 3900RPM(approx)@100k: I should probably compare my Tacho with an accurate one. It does 'feel' like its doing about 4000rpm at 100 though, so I don't think mine would be miles out... All of my quoted speeds are GPS speeds.

Either way, regardless of the RPM it is actually doing, I am happy with the way mine sits at 100 on the highway.

ive got 31's at 22psi, 6.5 gears, standard diffs, injected G13bb and i can sit on 110/120 pretty comfortably.

Oh and it also has a 2in exhaust.

It has very good on road manners for the mods it has. It probably has something to do with the fact there is still 5 leafs in the 2-3" lift springs... (lockers ftw )

Mine pushed 31s no problems with 4.9 gears and the 1.3L. I say go for it

PEZOOKI - Mine sits on 110-120 at 3500rpm. I would have though 4000rpm is getting on the high side.

Maybe, as I said I should check the accuracy of my Tacho. However, there is a big difference between 4.9:1 and 6.5:1!

there is only a 4% difference in high range.

Sorry I meant high as in I would find it hard to put up with for any length of time. I find at constant 3500rpm that it gets annoying in mine already. Didn't check your gearing. I wasn't disputing the accuracy. I've actually considered before trying to gear it and playing with the cam to try to get mine to sit comfortably at 3000 or below on the freeway.

I am happy with how mine travels at those 'higher' revs. It just hums along and doesn't really drone, or resonate at all. In my zook, it is as comfortable at 5000rpm as it is at 3000rpm (in terms of noise in the cab). It seems fairly well balanced. I have done some 4+ hour trips on the highway and I haven't found it too bad at all. Not all zooks are created equal though I guess!

I will get around to checking the accuracy of my tacho and I will post back here with the results when I have them.
