Hey guys took my new Jimny out for its first ever time on dirt (just a few moderate dirt tracks) I have a 1998 JX jimny (stick transfer case not push button) and from the very first time i put her into 4H the green light on dash "4WD" kept flashing and never stayed constantly on. I tried both 4H and 4L during my test drive before i bought the vehicle and she clicked in and out perfect and the light was constantly on - not flashing. Since then i had done maybe 100k's on road (bout a quarter of a tank) and nothing else, so soemhting has gone wrong here i assume? I've had a decent (20-30 min) look over the bottom of the car and cant see any visible split tubes or anything. The car seemed to go fine out on the tracks, whilst i didnt hear it physically click in or out of 4WD it seemed to be in 4WD all the drive and went really good for a stock zook. Any help would be appreciated, Noel |

Might not be much help but my auto Jimny I always try and put into neutral before changing to 4wd, and if going from 4wd/4 low back to 2wd it will change out much easier and with less clunking by reversing a few meters as this removes any diff wind up if it has occurred. |

If it still has auto hubs check all the vacuum hoses from the firewall out to each hub. If you can, get someone to change 2wd-4wd while your looking around at the hoses and listening for leaks. |

Yeah i always have the Jimny in neutral when changing 2WD - 4WD. I'll have to see if i can grab a mate to give me a hand with selecting 4WD etc whilst im under there listening to some leaks, i had a look for about 20/30 mins and couldnt see anything but didnt check for noise. The light doesnt come on at all until i start driving say 5-10 metres down the road and just starts flashing, however it is in low range when i put her into low range (definitley cant miss her revving its guts out haha) just sketchy on high range. Cheers. |

The transfer case will change from 2wd to 4H/4L without the front hubs engaged. Get it crossed up (1 front wheel in the air) and see if it spins when in 4wd. No spinning front wheel means hubs not locked and you have a leak somewhere. Don't forget the reservoir inside the front driver's side quarter panel. Remove the plastic panel above the drivers side front wheel to see it. |
