So,

Currently in the middle of sorting out rear power distribution panel with inverter set-up in the rear of my GV and was wondering if it is really necessary to run the (-) all the way back to the aux bat under the hood.
Its only a 300w inverter which will only draw about 30A,
I have 25mm2 cable which I am going to run to a distruibition block in the back to minimise voltage drop and power loss (still figuring out which is the best way to get it there) which is rated @140A, would it be safe/fine
to run the (-) directly to the chassis rail?

Other Items running would be
Engle ~3A
Lights ~1A
Compressor ~10-15A

So at total max consumption would be approx = 48A, it is unlikley that the compressor would be used at the same time the inverter would be running at full load however it pays to prepare for the worst.

Check the GV has a heavy earth to the chassis rail. Sierras, and I think Vitaras, don't have earths to their chassis at all.

Otherwise, I don't see a big problem.

They definitely do have a small earth wire from the battery -ve terminal to a screw on the firewall.

Doing as the OP proposes would be okay so long as this cable is replaced with something heavier. This wire is probably only 6mm2 or so. Replace it with some of that 25mm2 and you'll be okay. Don't forget to fuse that +ve cable somewhere close to it's source.

Yes, but that's not the chassis rail. I'd be surprised if that's earthed at all. There's not normally any reason to.

Easy fixed, I'll just run a 25mm2 direct from the aux (-) under the hood to a bolt on the chassis rail at the front.
Doing it this way will make it a hell of a lot easier as I'll only need to get the 1 25mm2 cable down to the back, anyone know off the top of their head how much space is under the door trim? My other idea was maybe run the (+) cable through the chassis rail to get it down the back if I have to go outside, at least it would provide physical protection. My only concern would be vibration rubbing through the insulation eventually, the cable I have is double insulated and I intend to install a 100A circuit breaker straight off the battery.

Run the cable inside a piece of anaconda cable tied /saddled to chassis/floor

Sierra chassis is earthed at taillights and/or numberplate lights depending on model. Not exactly a serious earth but enough for the few lights.
