Hi All
I'm considering converting the jimny from manual to auto, but am well aware of the issues with jimny auto boxes, so would like to avoid that.
the next option is the obvious AW4 option, but, if you upgrading why stop there? if your going to the effort already, then what else might fit and work that might improve things?

for example a 8HP45 from a smashed BMW 1 Series (F20), BMW 3 Series (F30), BMW 5 Series (F10) (if it could be made to fit, which im not sure about) has the ratios

4 1.667
5 1.285
6 1
7 0.839
8 0.667
R 3.3
whereas the jimny has
1st 2.875
2nd 1.568
3rd 1
4th 0.696
R 2.3

so (if it fit in the old gearbox + jackshaft length) the 8 speed gearbox would offer more reduction in 1st, and second then a standard jimny in 1st, giving a better crawl speed, then you have 3-4-5 for round town, then 6-7-8 for the highway.
now the ratio on the 8th gear is a bit low compared to the jimny 4th, but the VVT manual 4.3 diffs should correct some of that, and if its not enough, its time for a m15 or m18 swap to get the use out of 8th without hunting back to 7th.

so, is there other options? has anyone done this? keen to see the results of others.

My guess is fitting and shifting this auto will cost squillions. These autos are used in applications with very complex engine/transmission/torque management. They're also used primarily in cars with very flat torque curves and way more torque than a jimny.

Personally, I think the only way to make it feasible would be to swap the BMW engine, gearbox, dash, loom etc.

I did own a bmw with the 8 speed. It was an awesome gearbox, but the key is all in the transmission management. I never had any idea what gear it was in.

She is learning. Problem is ive nearly finished the trailer so have to start another long winded expensive project. Have a funny feeling one of these autos is going to be 2.5k plus at a wreckers before computery bits but
