Hi Guys,
I've read through many similar types of problems here but figured maybe asking again would help. In my Jimny when in third or 4th gear (mostly) if I accelerate under load I can hear a grinding noise that sounds similar to a pulley bearing. It's most obvious when driving next to a concrete wall or under a bridge / tunnel because of the sound reflection.

It doesn't seem to do it the same in first or second or at higher revs, it's mostly an under load situation and it sounds more like it's coming from under the car, than in front.

It is sort of similar to a cricket or frog going 'rert rert rert rert'. I thought maybe the transfer case (since it seems there is a bearing in there?)

Seems to indicate maybe a transfer chain? The car now has just over 100,000 km's on it and is a 2008 Model M13A Jimny.

Is this a massive problem if left unresolved? I'd like to fix it before I take it on the next long drive to Melbourne (in a couple of months time).

Hmm thanks for the suggestion.

If I get under the car and try to rotate these drive shafts left and right I shouldn't feel any play in them correct? No clicking etc..? If they do have play that's a likely culprit.

Ive got this same problem, have not been able to work it out yet. Someone suggested the backing plate but I have not looked. I did find the rear shaft CV horribly worn but this did not have an effect on the noise. Did not drive the car for a month, took it out today - no noise :S

I had a similar experience in that the noise was less obvious after a service. We put new coil packs in it because the ECU fault code came up for spark. It seemed to be more quiet after that for a while but now I still hear it.

I just worry something will let go in the middle of nowhere, no so worried about the sound if it's not critical.

Mechanic didn't pick up on it, when I told him about the noise he assumed it was 'pinging'. But I fill her with 95 RON minimum.

I changed all oils including transfer, box and both diffs. Still made the noise for a week after the service, I will go for an extended run tomorrow and see if it comes back

I have a weird noise come from what we thought was the transfer case when 4wd engaged only. Started at about 60 kph.
Turned out to be a torn front drive shaft boot.
Once you got up to about 60kph the centrifical force would deform it enough for it to slap on the cross brace.
Kudos to the mechanic for sussing this.
Put a post up on want it for new boot as Suzuki would only sell the boot complete with drive shaft a bit rude a $10 part with a $500 unwanted part.
Hopefully the sierra one fits as suggested

Last couple of days I haven't noticed it the same. It has been colder than normal, so got me thinking about oil viscosity and perhaps VVT issues? Is VVT rattle a common issue with these M13As.

Just an update I've had a mechanic look at this, he's also perplexed as to what it could be. It hasn't gotten any worse but nothing on the drivetrain (from the exterior looks worn or damaged).

I think the thread above I linked to is probably the most likely cause but until I remove the gearbox I won't find out for sure...
