Hi guys, last time I had the Jimny in 4WD I noticed some rumbling noise and vibration.
2WD is fine.
2WD with hubs locked is fine.
Only an issue when in 4H or 4L.

I've tried two different transfers so I don't think it's that, but could be wrong.

The front hubs/axles/diff seems to have quite a bit of play.

At the moment I'm thinking CVs or diff, keen to hear your thoughts.

It does have play in it Steve, I'd ruled that out based on it had play prior to the current issue but maybe it's just gotten to a more noticeable state of wear. I'll have a look again tomorrow, what's an acceptable level of slip yoke play?

Unbolt front driveshaft and drive it in 2H, with and without hubs locked, and in 4h and 4l. Easy way to rule it out. Don't have a rule of thumb for wear- less is always going to be better than more.

I'll update tomorrow after giving it a try.
Seemed weird to me that 2H with hubs locked didn't rumble but I guess that's due to no torque going through.

Side not, where do you think all the play in the front end would be coming from. Last time I had the shaft off I could turn the input flange 5-10° while the hubs are locked.

Could try pumping slip joint full of grease also, as well as unis if they're greaseable.

Slip joint has plenty of grease but I'll have a good look at the unis when I pull the shaft.

5-10 degrees is nothing. I don't even think I'd be worried at 20-30 degrees. There's lots of places for play built in to a front end.
