Hi,

I recently purchased an 1980 LJ80 and having some trouble with getting into gears. With the engine off I can get into all gears easily but running I can’t and If I try reverse it just grinds. Trying to start it first is like you don’t have the clutch in, the only way I can select a gear while running is by selecting natural on the transfer case and then I can move into all gears but no drive then if I try going back to 2H or 4H it grinds. We played around with it today and it all of sudden started working so we drove around the block no issues but then stalled it going up the driveway now it’s back to not working. Any ideas on what this could be?

I'm guessing you have to pull the whole motor/gearbox out to change it?

It might just be adjustment on the base-plate of the gearstick (assuming it's a standard gearbox and linkage arrangement). Tiny movements of this can effect which gears you'll get.
