looking at getting a new battery for my jimny, tossing up between the Exide X60DPMF & Optima D51. i'm interested in the exide after what sideways posted here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=48296 price is about $100 different between the 2 batteries but that doesn't really concern me. i want to add a 6000lb winch at some point & don't really have any other taxing electrics, but if either battery would, it'd be great to be able to run my 40 litre fridge/freezer overnight & still have enough juice left to start the car in the morning (not essential). http://www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/sh ... e-battery/ http://www.exidebatteries.com.au/batter ... me/x60dpmf so what are peoples thoughts on these 2 units ? |

I have a optima. Cant fault it. For long drives on corrugated roads id prefer a spiral cell agm over a conventional plate. |

I got an optima from a wreckers 5 years ago, for $40. It is still a kick ass battery. Previously I had the biggest exide battery I could fit in the sierra. After a year it failed due to vibrations. The optima also recovers easily from being flat. Optima are have a good rep for a reason. |

how do you guys get on winching with it ? i don't really want to fit dual batteries but would like to be able to do a self recovery with it if possible. was also thinking about a 4500lb winch just for the lower power consumption but then it may not get me out of trouble. seems i'm in a bind. |

Graphic - A d51 is fine for winching - They have very low internal resistance. Winching is less about the battery and more about the alternator though. My D51 winches just fine. A 4500b winch is false economy if you're trying to minimise total current draw. A small winch at high load and low speed will consume more power to get the job done than a faster winch with a higher load rating. The old 6K warns were about as efficient as a winch gets up to 6K. Steve has a point. Put in a falcon 100A alternator and a d51 and youll be laughing with a larger winch |

thanks guys, i've looked at the falcon alternator but worried about loosing the fan for an electric one. also read about the lancer alternator that may drop right in & provide a decent boost. |

from what i read it was a case of V belt, V pulley, alternator bracket & thermo fan. might have to have a re-read, it's something doable as i'm replacing the water pump in near future (already have pump & coolant sitting there waiting). |

Read the whole falc alt thread. That option is for g13a/g13ba who decide to use swift wp, and swift wp pulley, with the swift crank. The wp pulleys off g16a are the ones you want, so you can keep the mech fan. and sierra alt bracket ^both options wont work when g16b or g13b/g13bb due to wider timing belt On a jimny, you already have multi rib pulleys. All you need to do is mod the bracket and bolt it up. If it cant be modded, you need a vit/swift 1.6 alt bracket. I just put a falc alt into my baleno. Baleno alt bracket was different , and the baleno slider bracket didnt work either. I used a vit/swift 1.6 alt bracket, and a modified top slider bracket from a vit. You can even use the stock size belt. So much electrical goodness |

aren't the guys saying without the V belt the belt will slip though ? from what i read is that changing to the V belt is what leads to changing the pulleys, then the loss of the fan. i'll have to give it a re-read through as i can get hold of those alternators for nothing. |

Will slip with the v belt. Multi-rib belts take much more load before slipping. The dicking around is due to sierra v belts and the offset wp pulleys, and possibly the different bolt pattern on harmonic balancer the 8v engines have. 16v engines are all multi rib and its only the alt bracket and slider bar thingo that need tweaking/swapping etc. |
