| Post subject: | Possible gearbox and Power steering issues on the Vit. |
Hi all, Have done some searching without luck so thought I had better run these issues past you all. I have a 95/96 swb 1.6, auto vit that has developed a couple of problems after a recent fishing trip to the coast. Started it up the other morning before heading to the beach, travelled about 1km and found that the revs went up but the speed didn't change, it did this a few times and then I pulled over and turned it off. Restarted, idled nicely, put it in drive and it took off fine, then seemed to slip again with the revs going up. Kept driving it this time and it settled down with no more issues. Question. Is this a major issue to be concerned about. I checked the transmission fluid level and it appears to be spot on. Maybe time for a filter and fluid change. Second issue, I had to drive through a heap of water and found that the steering got so tight I couldn't turn the wheel to make a turn, ended up doing a 6 point turn to get around. After a few minutes driving it seemed to free up. Could this just be because the PS belt got wet or is it more sinister. Thanks in advance for assistance. Kev. |

No expert and lots of variables but sounds like the Tranny may need a overhaul/service,IIRC the Trimatic needed its bands tightened after high K's otherwise it would slip.Someone on here that owned one would know. |

I've experienced the PS issue with my Pajero in "deepish" water, and in fact my first thought was that the engine had died, but, once I cleared the water, the steering went back to normal, so my assumption is that the belt got wet & slipped. |

More likely to be a seizing of the idler arm. But yes a loose or slipping belt could do it. I carry a spare steering belt because they a bugger without. Or even a chunk of something jammed steering temporarily. Auto overheating could give those symptoms. Change fluid and make sure extra cooler is working. |

PS mine plays up when auto is cold, and is fine when reaches running temp. Fitting a temp gauge may be wise for beach work. |

Fitting. Temp gauge might be useful for every auto ever. Krat, are you familiar with the procedure for checking auto trans fluid level? Was the fluid bright red or dark? |

Thanks for all the replies. I will do a check on the power steering belt and idler arm plus the linkages etc next trip to SA where the zook is garaged. In respect to the Auto probs, as you stated Chris, it did it first up in the morning after being left out in the open overnight, so it was very cold. No problems when warmed up. The fluid level was checked as per the proper procedure when warmed up Steve, so no issue with the level. The colour was certainly not bright red though, more of a plum colour. I will replace the filter and fluid next trip to SA and see what happens. Checked the VIN and it is JSAETAO2CO. Seems like have to match this with the numerous variants of auto service kits available so that I get the right one. Any suggestions for a good quality filter and gasket Thanks Kev |

Also worth noting, I changed from Nulon brand to penrite auto fluid this time, and it feels heaps better, and it stopped leaking, too. |
