Hi all
This is my first post
I've got a 2013 Jimny ( my first 4wd) and Im wondering if anyone can tell me what this sound might be that has just started up.

Its a brief 2-3 second whirring sound underneath ?maybe front left when you drive away. It only happens the once after you turn the ignition on and drive away . The first time you drive away it makes the sound and then it goes away and you dont hear it again until you stop and turn off the ignition and then start it again later . Then you get the sound once more as you initially drive away. Then its gone again. It sounds kind of like an electric motor whirr sound, something like the electric windows or mirrors. Nothing too scary sounding. Doesn't seem to be affecting the car in any way I can tell. Nothing else seems out of the ordinary

I have just had a 50 mm suspension kit installed. I didnt hear the sound before it was installed. But I didn't think it was there in the first few days after the installation either, so I'm not sure. I have just been doing a bit of 4wding on Stradbroke Island, and thats when I first heard it.
The only other mod is 215 All Terrain Tyres

I was worried that the car was going into 4wd or something without me selecting it, but there's no sound of hubs locking or anything, just a whirrr then nothing. 4wd and 4wdL both seem to be working fine and the lights come on to indicate when you select them.

Someone else said maybe fuel pump?

I've got no idea but I'm just not wanting to ignore a potentially damaging symptom.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Cheers

Rod

All I can say is the fuel pump is in the tank in the rear. It can be heard if you turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the car. It makes a whirring sound and then stops as the fuel reaches the correct pressure but not normally heard after the car is running.

Sounds like fuel pump to me. Turn on the ignition and wait for 1 min, do not start the car. If the sound goes away I could almost bet it is the fuel pump. Sounds as if the pump is dieing or blocked if you can still hear it after you start the car though.

I can tell you exactly what it is...My late 2012 jim does the exact same thing so I went to my local Suzuki dealer. He chuckled at my concern and said you need not worry for it is the ABS pump priming and it is meant to do that and because its mounted up on the inner left hand side,it vibrates through the car. Its perfectly normal for our models to be doing this.

Hey thanks for the replies,

From what you're saying TEKNO it does sound like it is the ABS pump in my car making that sound.

I'm going to stop worrying about it now!

Cheers again

I have ABS on the LH side of the engine bay in my 2009 model and it never makes any noise. Might have been a design change since mine was manufactured.

Same here Mike, no noise and mines the very last of the old shape.
If there was a design change it would have to be on facelift models only.

It might just be on the facelift models that it occurs.
On mine I didn't really notice it until after I put the raised suspension kit in so I don't know if that changed things around a bit.

I don't think its the fuel pump though cause the electric sound only comes on when you begin to move. You can sit there idling away in neutral after you start the engine and you don't hear it until you stick it in gear and take off. Then you get about 10 yards down the road before it goes bzzz for a couple of seconds.

Plus it definitely sounds like front left on the car

My initial worry was that it had something to do with the auto hubs and 4wd setup, but I think the abs pump might account for it

The ABS explanation seems quite logical. Just curious about why only the newer models do it.

Confirmed....it is only the Facelift models that do this...why the change I wonder??? I was in the Auto industry for the last 15 years and sometimes.stuff knows why but the manufactuers make little barely noticable changes sometimes and im sure it's just to make things more awkward for the aftermarket scene? And of course us revheads.
