Post subject:  vitara electronic speedo conversion

Hi people.

(my first post yay - be gentle?)

I am now the owner of a 92 Vitara soft top 1.6 injected model.

It has 31" wheels and a body lift, and the speedo is of course out by about 15%. I also see that the trip meter is jammed which is apparently common.

I was wondering what the options are to swap to an electronic cluster (or just speedo) which would among other things allow me to use a simple electronic frequency adjuster to calibrate the speedo correctly.

Has this been done? What do people think?

thanks,
Mathew

U can buy a speedo gear box that screws on the tc case to correct it. Its a must to get engineering.
U may be able to get a gv one to work but i dont know much about speedo clusters

Other than finding another dashboard cluster from a '92 Vit to solve the trip odometer problem, your solutions are few.

You can go to a speedometer shop and have them install a correcting gearset inline with your speedometer cable (usually installed on the backside of the cluster). This will correct the speedometer and odometer to read correctly for the larger tyres you have installed.

There are aftermarket dash units that you may be able to install to completely replace the factory cluster - although that will take a lot of work and money. See http://www.dakotadigital.com/ for ideas on this.

Alternatively, you can use an automotive GPS unit to provide correct speed readings. It will not help with Odometer readings, though.

I hope that this helps!

^ this.

Swapping clusters isn't really feasible.

I can get a mechconverter box ok. Would like to fix the odo on the gauge but not much point if it dies soon again.

So what i am hearing is nobody has done this would be on my own.

Thanks

I have never done this on a Suzuki product, but I had a reduction gearbox on a military vehicle that I used to own.

I hope it works out for you!

Darkhorse has had it done to a Vitara.

I am now the owner of a spare auto vit cluster.

Also the owner of a gutted Ford Econovan cluster. Why? it was cheap and had the correct max speed and sweep angle. It was a bit damaged and the entire cluster is one big PCB so aside from harvesting some interesting bits like steppers, a waste of time....

My plan is still to replace the speedo, for which there are a few interesting options:

This looked good till I realised the odo only goes to 100 thousand kms...

as did this from vee Three:

Will go with this gauge frmo speed hut. A few people already have used them for converting an old cluster so I know what I am up for once it is gutted. Easily reprogrammable at any time - which means I could swap wheel sizes at any time and have a useful speedo a few minutes later.

Comes with some nice features as a bonus like service interval reminders for various things. The odo and trip meter is a graphical screen that can also show other stuff.

This will mean I need to make my own replacement face. Toying with the idea of putting in an auto-gear selector display while I am at it since I am already pulling it to bits...
