Hey i just picked up a 1992 wb vitara for $800, unlicensed project. Wondering what is the best year baleno engine to fit in the vitara? To replace the old g16b which has 288,000kms on it and low compression. I Have heard about changing cams, sumps and oil pickups and heads etc with some baleno engines, dont mind having to swap wiring harnesses etc if i must or even cams.but I want the most simplest of options |

A coilpack baleno motor would require a few tweaks to get to work with the vit g16 stuff. You would have to swap the camshaft, and put a bung to block out the hole for the crank angle sensor or swap the oil pump over. Use the vit rocker cover. A dizzy baleno would need camshaft, rocker cover and sump changed etc. Either option requires a long motor from a baleno, the rest is simple. There is talk that the coil pack is less prone to cracking due to changes in casting, but no idea on how true it is. To rewire the whole car to baleno coilpack efi seems pointless. Much more work and more cost, for little gain. Cut and shut the sump, and you need all the baleno sensors and manifolds, and swap them to the vitara manifolds. And wire it all in. Probably more things I've forgotten - honestly not worth it. |

OK, can you clarify what year you have? Your avatar says you have a 91 SWB, which will be G16A carby. If you have a carby car, you'll need to view the install as a complete EFI conversion, very similar to putting one in a Sierra. If you have a G16B EFI vitara, then alll of the options will require some work. Basically, you will need to swap manifolds, camshaft, sump, oil pickup and all accessories onto the baleno motor to turn the Baleno motor into vitara trim. If you locate a coil pack baleno you could consider swapping the whole motor, loom and computer over to avoid swapping the cam. You'd need to cut and shut the crankshaft position sensor pocket into the vitara sump and then the airbox location and water piping will need to be modified. You could consider trying to swap the coil pack baleno MAP, throttle body etc onto the Vitara inlet manifold. This would give you no distributor, a crank (and cam) angle sensor, no air flow meter, the airbox could stay in the factory spot, and you wouldn't have to do water piping. This might be the happy medium of getting all the Baleno advantages without breaking into the motor to do the cam swap. You still have to do the sump mod. Coil pack Baleno's start about year 2000. Just some thoughts. Slightly beaten by JDK. |
