Post subject:  Have i Killed my ECU?

Short story. g16a efi auto conversion. Had spark. added wiring for fuel pump. main relay and fuel pump relay only operating on crank. revised wiring. possibly had a retard moment and added power to wrong wiring. Now no spark no relays switching.

blue relay control wire between ecu and main relay is showing 5 ish v but jumping to 12v in the on position. is this normal? does the control wire operate the relay by going to earth or 12v.

any input appreciated

Darren

The main relay is switched to earth by the ECU.

Thank you for the reply. The fact that I have 12v coming from the ecu wire, I must have a problem somewhere.

You may still have it wired up wrong. You should have 12V to the relay so you'll see 12V on the ECU side if its not properly grounded. The main relay just goes through a diode on the ECU, if you put power on that line then you'll probably burn out the track, its a safety mechanism to stop the ECU being stuck on by the diode blowing up..

Thanks. I will check it out. I had the cover off yesterday and could not see any obvious damage, but it did have a smoky smell. Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.,

Yep, you've popped something. Most likely a diode or transistor. I did something similar with the trolley tug by wiring the check engine light incorrectly, from memory.

Ouch! That's no good. I suppose I'm on the look out for a ecu now. The joys of modding.

ECU's are repairable - they're very ruggedly engineered and will normally blow something replaceable like a diode or power transistor without causing permanent damage to the rest of the computer.

I'd look into repair. If you can smell a burnt/smoky smell you should be able to spot where the failure occurred.

Thanks. I will look into that. That sounds like a good option.

I opened up my ecu and discovered a burnt out trace which is for the main relay control. I have had a go at repairing it with a conductive pen. Fingers crossed it passes continuity when it dries. If that fails I will solder it. Thanks for the help.

I would recommend that you use a 30awg wire link to bypass the trace - don't go to a higher gauge as it won't be as safe.

Circuit Pen did not work. Soldered in a bridge all works good now. Thank you for your help :)
