Through help here and other resources, I have come to the conclusion that my input bearing in my 5 speed manual gearbox on my 2000 GV is stuffed (2 litre JB20 motor).

My mechanic said he will not be able to tell till the box is out of the vehicle whether or not he can replace it with out stripping the box completely down or not.

Has anyone here had experience in this area that can advise whether the box needs a complete pull down to replace the input bearing or just the box sitting on the work bench and replacing like that ?

You will need to crack the box open. That is transfer off, bellhousing off and the two halves seperated. The input shaft shroud can come off from inside the bellhousing to expose the front seal but the bearing has a retaining clip that locates the bearing in a groove in the top and bottom half of the case. Once the case is open the input shaft will lift out and you can pull the bearings off it.

You can see the two bearings at the top of the photo with the retaining clip.
