So I had a 1.6b put in my zook with 1.3 head. All rebuilt apparently. It's now done 15000kms as per instructions From garage. It runs ok doesn't seem to chuck out loads of smoke. A little white/grey on start up.
The pier while not a rocket is an improvement and I'm happy with that.
However when I put her under load I get a smell of oil and the level has gone down just over a quarter on the dipstick every 4000kms. Is this considered acceptable. I would have thought a new engine wouldn't loose oil until the rings got tired. I'm no mechanic though.

What oil is being used?
Any leaks? Just because its new doesnt mean it wont leak. If build correctly it shouldnt.

1/4 of the dipstick is 250ml IIRC - I think that's entirely normal and expected for a rebuilt motor. Was the motor bored with a deck plate installed or just honed?

Most rebuilt motors have a short life and are much looser/use more oil than a factory motor.

Thanks guys. Not sure what oil was put in as the garage that fitted it have done all the servicing so far.
This was to stay in warranty.
As for the extent of the rebuild I'm again not sure. The Suzuki place at slacks creek fitted it,
As long as it's not considered excessive I'm ok with that.

Steve, what would u consider excessive consumption over a 5000km interval?

I'd say a litre over 5k, but most manufacturers won't warranty for oil consumption until it's reached 1l/1000k.

On the subject of oil consumption but a bit of hijack, I have used 1.2 litres of oil in 18,000km in my brand new V6 Diesel (Discovery). The consumption does seem to be slowing. I am told that a new diesel will consume oil which slows down as they wear in. Is that true?

The fact that Land Rover use a 0W-20 oil I reckon also has something to do with it as well. Any opinions welcome.

My rebuilt G13 (done at same place as OP) went from probably a little less than that to about 1L/5000km in the 200,000km thus far. Last time I was buying 5L containers of oil a full 5L would last a service and topping up until next service.

In my experience any Suzuki engine that doesn't need an oil top up in between a short service interval is pretty good.

Thanks guys. The engine was warranteed for 20,000kms. Cost 3.5k all up. It's been back loads of times for issues and I'm sick of the place that did the work. They are nice and friendly but despite about 10 return trips back to them it still has a small oil drip. Tiny but it's there and it smells of oil under load and is using a little as mentioned. Oh and despite a carb rebuild twice apparently it still won't idle until warm.
I didn't know if it was worth yet another trip back to them or not but after hearing from you guys I think I will just drive it and keep topping it up and changing the oil as needed and get the carb rebuilt elsewhere.
Bloody garages.
I don't expect perfection with a Sierra but Jesus is it really that hard for people to do there job properly.
