Post subject:  Engine stalls out when put into reverse?

Hey guys,

Got a 1litre with the 4 speed box, it will drive around fine through all gears going forwards but the engine will cut/stall out as soon as I put it into reverse. Anyone experienced this problem?

Thanks in advance! :)

Unplug the reverse switch and/or pull the reverse light fuse and see what happens?

Try adjusting carby

How does the carby know what gear the car is in?

The reverse gear in a transmission needs more power than all other gears, idle screw might need adjusting?

Reverse needs more power? really? How do you figure that? It has the same number of gear contacts as 5th in an overdrive box and a lower ratio than 1st forwards (generally) so where is the power consumption coming from?

Does it die as soon as you select reverse or when you let the clutch out?

As soon as I select reverse, with the clutch still all the way in! Very weird problem

Does the vehicle lurch backwards/crunch a bit when reverse is selected and it stalls? Could be that the clutch is staying partially engaged, due to a worn clutch, pressure plate/bent fingers or could be a worn spigot bearing. I'm not sure if your clutch is cable or hydraulically controlled, but check your clutch cable adjustment, or if you have a dodgey slave or master that's not allowing full disengagement of the clutch. Forward gears may be ok due to being synchro gears and allowing selection to take place. Even oil or some other contaminant may be causing the clutch to drag.

All these suggestions are only relevant if you answered yes to the first questions though.

Do as JDK81 says

My nephews Sierra did this, pretty sure you'll find it's something wrong with the reverse sender on the gearbox or its wiring.

LOLs at some responses
