Post subject:  Buying a wrecking yard engine

So my engine is dead (or close to it) and needs replacing. There are a few at the local wreckers but obviously I can't just start the car and check for any issues. Does anyone here have any tips for checking an engine for issues without starting it? I already know to check for oil/leaks on the engine, and check the oil to see if its milky. What else can I do to make sure I'm not buying a dud?

PS: I'm chasing a g16b, but I'd assume some tips can be used for all engines.
