G'day guys I have a loud buzzing/whining in all my gears except 4th gear , also had some leaking transfer case oil that I have been topping up , anyone got any idea what the problem is ?
Probably a worn bearing in the transmission - input shaft would be my guess - fourth gear is a "direct drive" so the input shaft will also be supported by the selector hub behind it, in the remaining gears that does not happen.
Layshaft bearings are a possibility - there is no load on the layshaft in fourth gear - it's just that the input shaft bearing is a fairly common failure...
Truth be told, I wouldn't pull down the transmission to change just one bearing - if I go in there, I'll be changing all the bearings and seals - I actually have done it once, I had the input shaft bearing fail about six months after a rebuild, so I changed that one alone, but in situations where the condition of the bearings is unknown, it doesn't make sense to put that much effort into the repair for one bearing, you're going to end up pulling it apart again.
Here's a hint - make sure the vehicle is level when you refill the transmission after a rebuild - I have no proof, but I strongly suspect that was the cause of the premature failure mentioned above.
Can you find a "whole NEW gearbox"? At what price??
If you really mean a used gearbox, do you actually know what you're getting, and how long before you end up back where you are now, or in a worse position?
