I have been doing some research but I'm struggling to conclude wether it is worth putting a 1.0L transfer case into my Jimny wanting the ability to run 32s or 33s.. would it be enough to just put in the 1.0l transfer or just spend the extra and build a rocklobster? Cant find much information on people just straight swapping the 1.0l transfer cheers |

I've done a bit of research, and I'd say no, both options aren't sufficient for your planned tyre size. If I'm correct, your current transfer ratios are: 1.32:1 high range and 2.145 low. 1.0 transfer case is 1.58 high and 2.55 low. Rock lobster is 1.68 high and 4.1(?) low That makes high range about 15% lower than your current setup. Your planned tyres are at least 23% bigger than standard, therefore you'll be revving 8% lower for the same road speed, ar about 350rpm lower at cruise. That's a fair bit and will hurt fuel economy and cause you to be downshifting frequently. Off road, you might get away with 4.1ish reduction, but in reality you'd be far happier with reduction in the 6.5 range. Go straight to a 1.3 transfer and 6.4/6.5 gears IMHO. |

Apparently the auto jimny cases are a fair bit lower |

He has the wrong model jimny to benefit from a auto transfer |

If your planning on running 33's I can speak from experience and say Sierra case with 6.5's is going to be the way to go. Highway is great and low is awesome there is no point messing around with alternatives for tyres that size on a Jimny. Also take into consideration breakages driveline wise it's better just to do the Sierra case and gears and call it done. |

And then be prepared to upgrade the axles and CVs as the next step? |

Upgrading axles and CV's I wouldn't even consider as a step. More a necessity that's is done in conjunction with the gearing to make a Jimny which you can take off-road |

Thanks for all the help im not too worried about the on road speeds and that because I will be soon putting a much more powerful engine in and converting my diffs to hilux diffs so I do have the strength to run 33s without any damage I just want a slower crawl speed because like every other jimny owner I dont enjoy my Low 1 being everyone else's low 3 haha |

You don't need Hilux diffs - I know of plenty of Zuks on 33s which generally have pretty reliable drivelines and are still on Suzuki diffs. |

You'll need a WT Sierra case. Speaking from experience my 1st low is plenty low, equivalent to that of a sierra. I personally don't see the need for "a much more powerful engine" your going to be gearing your car to suit the desired tyres. All that a "a much more powerful engine" will do is put unnecessary strain on things. Especially If your not concerned about on road speeds, 6.5's with your 4.09 diffs (99 Jimny) is fine. I DD my jimny with that combo and it couldn't get much better for 33's. Just take a look at other peoples builds and take note on what they say. It'll save you a lot of hassle if you know exactly what your trying to achieve before you go throwing hilux diffs with 33's under a jimny. |

Rock lobster is 1.58 high, 4.16 low. 32" tyres have 21.7% greater circumference, 33s are 25.4%. A 1l transfer/rocklobster/4.16 (1.58 high) is 19.69% lower than what you have. 4.9s (1.628 high) are 23.41% lower. 6.5s are 28.18% lower. Pre vvt jimny auto transfers are the same ratio as manuals. You can use either NT or WT transfer, you can even use a switch case 1l transfer if you run 6.5s. WT is easiest as it already comes with the right flanges. If you're driving terrain that you need 32-33" tyres for you'll certainly want far lower gearing than a 1l transfer. Hilux diffs have the rear pumpkin centred so you can't run them in a Jimny. You need a Bundera rear diff but they're quite hard to get. You could run an MQ/MK diff which is about the same width. The Suzuki diff is likely strong enough anyway, depends on your driving. |

Also consider the early jim 4.1 crownwheel and pinion are made of cheese Seem alot weaker cast than sierra center of same ratio |

Sorry, I'm just here to find out about the question i asked. I know the jimny diffs will take it but the hilux diffs will take it better, not to mention they have a 70mm wider track and they also are compatible with more locker brands, compatible with elockers too. the bigger engine is for more power overall, im happy with the current offroad performance but that doesnt stop me from wanting to have more power why wouldnt I want a turbo diesel jimny... Thank you for your opinions though but I would just rather hear responses on the question I asked, thank you for those who have helped, I have decided I will be buying a WT 1.3L transfer case and putting 6.5:1 gears in it Cheers |

If you want a turbodiesel jimny you need a hilux. |

Or just a turbo diesel jimny like I'm going to as I have no interest in a car in which every second person has But why not make the jimny which is so original into something better and doing some original modifications to it like I will be |

Because all up, it won't be better. Adding weight to a Suzuki never, ever makes them better. |

I would like to see a turbo diesel Jimmy/Sierra/LJ... ...plenty of people say they will build one yet none seem to get built! |

Reubs wrote: I would like to see a turbo diesel Jimmy/Sierra/LJ... ...plenty of people say they will build one yet none seem to get built! Your attitude is much better than Steves, a little bit of encouragement rather than trying to shut down someones idea... these forums need more people like you Now Steve, a little bit more weight cant hurt too much when you're putting an engine in that is 92% bigger than the original 1.3, im sure a little zook could take it. They're not as fragile as you think |

Steve might come across that way but he raised the one point that encompasses why this is a bad idea, weight. It doesn't matter what the output of the new engine is you will have an unbalanced car that does not handle well. The "little zook" can take it, once you take out the transmission, transfer and diffs essentially leaving you with a hilux that looks like a Jimny. However once it is that abortion a crazy amount of weight will be over the front axle and next to nothing over the rear. You'll need very stiff spring rate in the front to overcome the weight compared to low in the rear, off-road the rear will just fall all over the place while the front hardly moves. On road you'll have a sluggish jimny that is crazy expensive and won't ride right due to the uneven weight distribution. But really, go ahead and do it. Just do it forewarned |

I'm having trouble fathoming how a diesel is even any good for this purpose or what the imagined upsides are? What diesel does the OP want to use? Cheap? no Power? not really sound? 4 cylinder diesels sound terrible fuel economy? What 4wd uses less fuel than a jimny once big tires are added... none |

bringing back this old post, I somehow came across a set of 5 31'' Simex extreme trekkers on 15x8 wheels for $450 and I just couldnt say no I just got together the money to do the reduced gearing but now I'm thinking 6.5:1 will be too much for the 31's Im now looking at 4.9:1 gears just wondering how people rate these. Does this virtually restore it to stock gearing just with bigger wheels or do these actually give you a true "crawl" like 6.5s would cheers |

Given there 4.9 to 1 as opposed to the 2.15 you currently have yes they will make a big difference, it's over 100% lower. But maybe not what some people would Callum's true crawl. I run them in a Sierra with 30's and think there perfect. |

Has anyone got 6.5:1 gears in running 31s? Does it become way too much? |
