G'day,

I've got 1 litre tray back Sierra and it seems the starter motor isn't disengaging.

So far I have changed the ignition barrel, didn't work.
Pulled starter out and had a auto sparky check it and said it was fine,re fitted and still having same issue

Have had a quick search and haven't picked up on anything else to try, any ideas ?

There shouldn't be any issue with the ignition etc. although to be thorough you could put a test light on the solenoid 12v and make sure the solenoid power is turning off when you release the key. The disengaging is a passive process in that you remove power from the solenoid the starter retracts (or should) to its natural resting position which is disengaged.

My money would have been on the starter being the problem (ie full of mud or dirt and sticking). But if your confident that's not the case I could only suggest that perhaps it isn't mounted correctly, maybe it's misaligned or some such that it prevents the solenoid from returning to the disengaged position. Do you know anyone else who has a similar Sierra you could take a peak at?

When did the problem occur? Was it always like that, started happening after some work to the motor or after a big mud digging trip? Just throwing out ideas

Nar it's been fine for years,I don't really drive it much but. was doing some work on the tray then went to move it and problem occurred, my brothers got the same Sierra might see if he will let me take his off and swap them over haha

Doesn't hurt, even if you promise to swap them back after.. That's the best way to isolate the problem if it is the starter..

If it doesn't get driven much and the problem happened spontaneously I'd be highly suspicious of some dirt or corrosion in the starter resisting the solenoid from returning. I'd be interested to know how the sparky gave it the 'all clear'.

Perhaps he's just hit it with 12v a few times and watched it engage and release, assumed that there isn't a problem because it didn't fault on the bench.
