Post subject:  08 Grand Vitara 1.9L Diesel - Injection Light - HELP!!!

Any insight to fixing problem would help!! I'm out of ideas...

So here's my situation

I bought a 2008 Grand Vitara 1.9L Diesel about 6 months ago, private sale. car has been great! Until now...

Two weeks ago the Injection light came on the dash and whilst driving up a steep hill went into limp mode and lost all power. Had to climb hill in first gear 15kph at flat foot!

Took the vehicle to the mechanic where the previous owners had been getting it serviced and where we continued to have it serviced. They had it for a week and said there were three faults which came up in diagnostic. They ended up clearing two faults. Replaced the wastegate solnoide $400. Said the issue was with the diesel particular filter so ran product through to clean it and said they got the % down to 0 from 75% build up. Also did a standing regen. After a week and costing $850 they said they could only clear two of the tree faults and suggested we take it to a Suzuki dealership to see if they could fix the issue.

So I take the vehicle to Suzuki and they inform me only a genuine Suzuki dealership can run a forced regen and this should rectify the issue. $400 later an oil and filter change due to forced regen the car is supposedly fixed.

Take it for a drive the following day and give it a bit to see how she goes. About 15 min into the drive the injection light comes on and sends it into limp mode again. Loose all power to car on motorway and have to drop down to 4th gear flat foot nothing over 2000rpm and lucky to get 70kph..

After reading many forums and suggestions as to what the cause could be I read that it could be the battery not providing the correct voltage causing the issue. The following time I go to check the car the battery is dead.. Coincidental.. I start to believe it could actually be the battery and purchase a new one as the current has dies and is three years old. I put the new battery in the injection light is no longer displayed. I take it on the same drive and give it and the injection light comes on in roughly the same place as before. Crawl back home. Check the car again in and hour or so the the injection light is off again.

Decide to connect the reader to the ecu and it gives three faults two of which are the same. The wastegate solnoide which was replace a few days ago and the throttle actuator..

Has anyone else had this issue or know of anyone who has and how to go about fixing this?? So far has cost my $1500 and no luck. Calling Suzuki again tomorrow...

How many Kms has the car done? And how often do you drive at 100kmh for at least 30 minutes and how much city stop start driving do you do? The DPFs seem to only be a problem in cars that never get driven far or fast.

Maybe try another, more switched on, dealer.

100000km. Driving wise it's gets both 100km for periods at a a time and also stop start city driving. What puzzles me is that they say it's the dpf but we have never actually had the dpf light come on... From my understanding when the car sensors the dpf to be building up and not performing the self regen the dpf light comes on to prompt you to do a long fast drive until the light goes out to clean it out. This has never been the case. Just the injection light...

If you are driving it on the hwy the DPF shouldn't be a problem. There was a recall on the diesel in 2009(?) to replace a gasket on the DPF, maybe check that was done. As you say, you're getting the injection warning light, not the dpf light. The Injection light can have a few different causes not just injection, mine turned out to be the exhaust temp sensor.

There are only few diesel owners on this forum so you may not find someone with the same problems here. Call Suzuki HQ and also call a few Suzuki dealers, you may find one that knows what's going on.

Hi, did you end up resolving this problem. Sounds like I'm in exactly the same position. Mechanic has replaced wastegare solenoid and regened the dpf. Still having the same issue with injection light going on then going into limp mode

I know this is an ancient thread, but does anyone have a definitive answer to this problem???
I've been researching for days and found nothing......very frustrating

I'm only partially tongue in cheek here.....

Burn it & claim the insurance.

No, don't do anything illegal, but from what I gather, looking at posts from owners of these early diesels over the years, is that many give grief.
No, I can't remember seeing a definitive answer.
Later cars (2012 or so, on) seem to fare better, but many would say this motor is not a good long term prospect - it is scary, but your car is already 11+ years old.
The days of getting reliable 400,000km over 30 years in diesels are gone.
We got offered cars with blown up engines for sub-$1,000 - and we didn't want them. Just not worth fixing.

Sorry, Rgs,
Michael

Hi

I bought a 2008 Grand Vitara 1.9L Diesel about 6 weeks ago. Been back to the dealer service department 3 times now. Has the same issue as getabeemer has. Has anyone come across a fix for this issue. Cheers
