Post subject:  Fixing up my new drover
Hi all, just bought a drover on the weekend (Not really sure if i can ask about drovers on here but all well), and ive gone over it and found a few things that i want to fix. Im just after some info on how to fix the issues being the following (Keep in mind this is my first car so excuse the noobness):
-Rubber seal is coming out of the ball thing on the axle that goes into the wheel.
-Motor seems to be running rich and im using a fair bit of petrol.
-Some times after starting the motor i hear a high pitch scream sort of noise??
-Theres a little lever next to the throttle that when you push it, it revs the motor even more, however its not connected to the throttle it look like the link that connects it is broken??
- Sometimes when steering i hear a grinding noise??

I can only help on the high pitch squeel, that is the fan/alternator belt squeezing due to it getting wet or not being adjusted correctly.
Which in turn means it spins on the pulley creating the squeel. Make sure there are no coolant leaks around there causing it, and make sure it's tensioned correctly. Inspect the belt for wear and replace if needed

I have seen a few Drovers on here :) so all is good mate!

is the "grinding noise" when steering are you at full lock (steering wheel left or right as far as it will go)?

the little lever sounds like a choke and is used for starting old cold engines, modern cars have computers that do all this for us now :(
put the choke into the position that makes it rev harder when is a cold morning otherwise leave it in the other position :)

without looking it up I would guess it has a carby and needs the fuel to air screw adjusted till it runs a little leaner but this is a trial and error type thing you will have to look into doing (try youtube) or get a mate who knows more/mechanic
if that suits you, but learning how to do these things your self will save money and give you a bit of pride :)

grinding noise is the power steering, needs fixing, sorry my knowledge ends there but hopefully someone on here can help :)

It's unlikely to have power steering considering it would have to be retrofitted from a Vitara or jimny.

Right, in front of a computer for the first time in a while. Here's my thoughts.

Step one, Download a factory service manual for an SJ50. Don't attempt any job without it. Almost every bolt/fitting/item has a procedure and torque setting and the difference between long lasting job of factory quality and a patch up you need to revisit will be how closely to adhere to the FSM.

Buy and fit a steering knuckle rebuilt kit.

(some/all) Drovers have a manual choke. it's likely to be that and has been rigged up in some random way over the years. using the FSM baseline the carby (put everything back to factory adjustment). It's likely the choke is partially on at all times and an owner has probably artificially lowered the idle speed to compensate.

Could be from a few places and isn't really indicative of a huge issue. could be tie rod ends, kingpins, steering box, steering shaft unis or steering column bushes. You might be able to find the source by spraying WD40 on/in the various steering components and see if it goes away.
