Post subject:  Welding a vit rear center

Hey guys.
What method have people used to weld a vit rear center?
I usualy fill the valleys on the gears up to allow some movement still? Is the vit carrier strong enough for this method? Driving with it done this way feels a lot more forgiving.

Any input appreciated

I welded the gears together and the gears to the cage anywhere possible, 4 axles later and the diff looks fine. Why would it be more forgiving to introduce a shock load every time you turned a different direction? If there is movement the diff is able to travel through that small range quickly and then lock up hard.

Im with zookfan. The shock loading (read: auto lockers) will be worse then it being solid state. Fill and fill and fill. Then buy a spool

I'm with Wilso on this one, a spool is reversable, and they are cheap enough aswell.

The free movement of the gears with a small amount of play makes the car drive better. We actually experimented with 2 lj diffs. The one not welded solid didn't understeer anywhere near as much amd felt better on tar.

In this case i will weld them solid!

Don't go the low range spool if you do I exploded one and a made cracked his and binned it there rubbish

Lror sell 3 types trailgear/yukon/trail tough.

People have broken both but not the yukon thus far. My spools will pop one day due to being trailgear

True that! How can ~5-10mm "movement" between the star gears make any noticeable difference in how it drives? That gear movement would probs correspond to like a few centimeters of tire rollout...

Quite the opposite.
A few ' will work out to be 200mm on a 31.
So when turning, rather than a constant drag, it will load and unload.
And no i haven't broken anything due to this

1 degree movement at the star gear is actually 6.87mm of circumference for a 31" tyre. You'd have to have almost 30 degrees free to get 200mm. And 200mm is only 8% of the tyre circumference.

Turning radius of a Sierra - 5.09m
Axle width for a WT - 1.34m (front)

So the inside wheel through a 90 degree turn is travelling (2(Pi)*(5.09-(1.34/2))*90)/360=6.94m
Outside wheel through a 90 degree turn is (2(Pi)*(5.09+(1.34/2))*90)/360=9.04m

The outside wheel is over speeding the inside by a rate of 30%, the car wouldn't be moving with an unloaded diff for more than roughly 175mm. Obviously this is all at full lock and that number grows basically exponentially the closer the wheels are to straight but I just can't realistically see this being an advantage.

When turning in one direction it will only be unloaded for the very short time that you are changing direction, there's no way it can unload while the tyres are still trying to turn at different speeds.
