Post subject:  Erratic Low Idle

Hi,

I have been experiencing trouble with low idling on my 1997 Sierra SJ80 since I bought it; but has seem to have gotten worse over the last few weeks. On a good day the car will idle at about 1500 when started up from cold and then as the engine gets hotter, the idle speed will drop to about 1000\900 RPM an keep that as a steady idling speed.

On a bad day like today , the car will idle at about 1500 when started up from cold and then as the engine gets hotter the idle speed will drop by small increments to below 1000 RPM and finally to the point where it idles too low to keep the engine alive and it will cut out completely while static at a traffic light.

This low idle only occurs when the I have my foot on the clutch, and off the petrol, as long as I am driving in gear it is fine and purring along. No shudders, no indication of anything being wrong. Also when I switch on the headlights and ventilation it raises the RPMs as expected, which sometimes saves the car from stalling while approaching or stationary at a traffic light, but even today that did not do the trick (it was sitting about 300 RPM when I pulled off the road. As soon as I turned off the engine and restarted the car it went back to about 1100 RPM and went well for about 15 minutes before started dropping off to 1000 RPM and below. Got home restarted the car after about 15 minutes and all good again. The fact that it comes and go makes it difficult to pinpoint ...

I checked the plugs and wires, it has new fuel filter and no obvious sign of leakages but did notice that the previous owner have cut off the single green wire that connects to a solenoid that sits on the front end of the Aisan carburator. Might this the cause of the issue ?

Thinking of changing the fuel pump and ultimately the carburetor or is there anything else someone can suggest. Any help appreciated. Thanks !

Change your fuel pump, its a good start, and then rebuild your carby. But before those things, there is two 14mm bolts on the front of the bowl, open those up, sick a flat blade in there and pull out the jets. Give them a clean, crc/degreaser/brake cleaner the bowl trying to clean out junk that might be making it suffer. Next i would just turn hot idle screw up a little bit to save it, and then wiggle all the vacume lines trying to find out if there is an air leak there somewhere.

Then maybe pop the water choke lines off the back and see if there is a funny air lock in there somewhere.

They are notoriously hard to work on and internet diagnose.
