I have a 1.6 with a webber carb on it to go into my swb sierra. I acquired a brand new turbo of a 2.8 rodeo. I plan to tig up an exhaust manifold and all stainless piping. I want to blow straight through the carbe into the inlet. I understand I will probably need an electric fuel pump and bigger jets.
Has any one done something similar .

My mate put a tata turbo on an old corolla paddock basher this way, and runs 5psi boost. this thing hammers and hes flogged the shit out of it for the past 6 months!

just do it mate. people might say that it won't work correctly but the only way to find out is to try it. you just have to make sure that it's not going to lean out so you have to look at your fuel system to make sure it will cope.

I'm not sure how rising rate fuel regulators work with carby fuel systems but this might be something to look into. They work on intake manifold vacuum pressure as far as i know.

Like I said my mate tiged up a manofold on a corolla and bunged on a tata turbo. It works well and its a stock carb. I doubt it will be the case for me but Im willing to put in the time and effort and make it work

brett and myself were discussing turboing a 1.3 with a weber on here somewhere and aparently a good (rebuilt) weber can handle 8psi boost standard without modification
you might need a rising rate fuel pressure regulator too

I don't know much about webers, but here are a few things you'll need to address to do this successfully.

If you air/fuel ratio goes too lean you will melt pistons, detonation will break your engine. You really want to avoid both.

* To correct fuelling, as you said, you'll most likely need bigger jets.
An electric fuel pump may not be necessary, but wouldn't hurt. For this sort of setup a rising rate fuel pressure regulator would probably be a good idea.
* Ignition timing will probably have to be backed off a bit to avoid detonation
* Carb needs to be sealed (eg. around throttle shaft) so that it wont leak under the pressure provided by the turbo.

the diesel 2.8 turbo would be great for that engine, i had one on a 1.3 and was on boost around 1500- 2000 and ran out of go about 6500-7000. this could of been cam, fuel pump or the turbo but it pulled hard from very low in the revs so i hardly every reved it past 4000 even out bush.

the easy way to set it up is just a blow thru with a webber (from the escort), rising rate fuel reg and vl fuel pump. the fuel reg lets fuel pressure in the carby as more boost goes into the engine so it equals out the pressure and works like a na engine sucking in fuel. the only problem with this is when you go above 7-8 psi you blow out the gaskets in the carby

the std webber carby (2ltr) flows pretty bloody close the the air rate of a 1.3 running 7 psi. the 1.6 might be a tad lean at full noise but it would just be a swap of some jets and you would be set.

go for it, its a easy way to make a good deal more power. i'll be doing at again.

Thanks guys. I picked up the car with the engine today. Its a 16 valve swift motor that someones already put a weber on.
The car is an 88 WT LWB so its already been adapted to suit. Must have some sort of adapter plate I havnt looked yet.
It has a hole cut in the firewall for the dizzy.
Does anyone no if a right angle drive unit is available for these dizzys.

I plan to pull it out and put rings bearings gaskets and seal through it before I transplant it.

If you want to put the stock dizzy and housing on you'll have to swap the cam too, because the cam has the gear drive on the end of it. The cam you have is different because it just has a slotted end.

I'm currently adapting a CA18 cam sensor to my 16v head so I can run programmable ignition.
