Post subject:  Issues with mounting a platform/tray to stock rails?
Hi all,


Has anyone had any issues with mounting a roof platform/tray straight to the stock rails that come with some Suzuki Jimny's? Could there be any issues with weight (within reason)? All I generally plan on strapping to the platform is a swag and 41 litre esky.

I've ordered a Rhino Rack Pioneer SX Platform from TJM to mount on my Jimny. The blokes at the shop suggested I wouldn't need to buy and install the cross rails, so the Pioneer platform will be mounted straight onto the stock rails.

Biggest issue with the standard Jimny rails is they are probe to cracking the plastic mounting feet. I've seen them crack with not much load at all.

Do you have suggestions as to how to prevent the mounting feet from cracking? Other than not overloading the platform with luggage etc.

According to my Suzuki Jimny manual it only suggests 30kgs of luggage/weight can be placed on the stock rails? Have you or do you know if 30kgs of weight can be exceeded? If so, by how much?

Do you also know of any methods which could rectify if cracking to the mounting feet was to happen?

The only way to fix it once it's cracked is to buy a new rail. Or make a custom basket that uses the same mounting points which is what I plan on doing shortly. Take a look at Skippy's build and basket design in the "I made it" section.

Honestly the rails are crappy and should only be used when absolutely necessary.
How heavy do you suspect your esky to be?

Try to keep it as light as possible on the stock rails, 30kg would be about the limit, anymore weight and it will feel a bit tippy IMO

Thank you for your response Kor3y101.

My esky is 41 litres, not that it's ever completely full. I will also plan on strapping down my swag onto the platform.

If the stock rails were to crack would the Rhino Rack Vortex RST roof rack bars work as a substitute for the stock rails?

Throw the stock rails away and buy a rack from genuine 4x4. They bolt straight to the roof rails original mounts and are pretty strong and light.
As a bonus they look like they belong unlike pretty much every basket that is mounted to the stock rails.
From memory mine was $400ish including freight to the NT

All trays need cross rails to mount them, unless you custom make some brackets to work with the factory rails.

How does TJM suggest it will attach to the factory rails?

If this is in reply to Sheps post;

They bolt onto the factory mounts. So pull off all the rails on the roof, and you are left with studs poking out of your roof. The new basket/rack picks these points up and eliminates the need to use cross rails and stock rails.

I don't know why anyone would stuff around with the stock rails when quality racks are available at a good price.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the bloke at TJM said that the Pioneer SX Platform would attach straight onto the stock rails by way of the Rhino Rack clamps (I'm not exactly sure what they are) that come with the platform.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's because I'm having a platform mounted to my stock rails as opposed to a basket or another form of a tray mounted that allows me to have a platform mounted. It may be something that is specific/unqiue to Rhino Racks. I'm not sure.

Kor3y101, do you believe this is what is planned for my platform, what TJM plan on doing?
