Well im joining the army soon and after basic training i will be based at bandiana for about 6 months or more from around nov.
Ive been looking at running 255/85r 16 km2 but now im thinking maybe a set of 32x9.5r16 simex centipedes might be the go . Will have normal tires for road and just trailer the 33 on the weekend to the start of the trails. What do people for vic that know the high country think. My auto gv will be twin locked tc gears and 5.12 so offroad gearing will be fine.

I don't think I'd bother with centipedes for the high country proper - most of the alpine tracks aren't all that hard or are seasonally closed. 255 85 16 KM2's would be plenty.

Simex's would be helpful for the harder tracks closer to Melbourne but they're 3+hours of highway from you at Bandiana so it's unlikely you'd want to run 'pedes for that either.

If its all pretty easy around that area your right i wouldn't bother with the simex. What do u recon the chances of getting busted driving in to aulbry on the 33 are. Am i better off just running my 245/75 bighorns off my ute till i get my posting and then buy tires to suit where ever i end up.iwill be driving mogs and gwagons around all week so it will probably be nice to drive something civilized on the weekend

I think you'll be fine on 255's so long as they are under the body work, you have appropriate flares and mudflaps, and the car isn't excessively tall.

I reckon the checklist goes like this:

Is it being driven like a dick?
Does it look like a pretend "comp car" (bundy stickers/ roof lights/wobbly/too tall/super loud etc?
Are the tyres covered? (mudflaps/flares)

If it's no to all of the above, the tyres will slide under the radar.

There might be some lowland tracks the locals around albury drive that favour a more aggressive tyre, but actual high county tracks shouldn't require them with the balance of your setup.

On a gv ?
What of the old cv dilema ?

Will probably run lux cv kit and floater. Havent started drive line yet been doing body work. Need to get lift sorted its way to high. Need to order some 100lbs coils for the rear as the 150 gave me way to much lift. It looks so stupid on stock wheels. I dont drive it like this i was just moving cars and trailers around the yardImage

Ive heard mixed things about the lux kit
Looks a little like a rollerskate ;)

I think tanshi should make some out of 2 cromo sierra cvs with a slip joint in the axle. That way no messing around with hub spacer and flange bolts hitting drop brackets

Haha ive been trying to convince him for ages

I thought the outcome of everyone trying slip yoked axles is that they bind up, influence the suspension, and put big thrust loads on everything.

That's my opinion too, definitely not for a high plunge suspension system that a GV has. Your diff drops would probably be the first weak link.

Well scrap that then thanks for the heads up. What problems r they having with lux cv kit. I know zook fan said i need the 4xfourart arms for clearence and need to do a heap of strengthening of the diff mounts .
I think a bigger inner like lux etc and a sierra outside cv would be good that way u get away with out the stupid hub spacer hanging outside the rims

Post subject:  Re: best tires for grand vitara

I don't think so - A sierra stub is still substantially longer than a GV stub.

Seems some have just as many issues snapping the lux cv's wether it has to do with the amount of droop in the front from longer struts or a misalignment but i dont see lux cv's as much of an upgrade for the work involved

My ftruck ttb runs a slip yoke type front axle with big unis inplace of cv's

From memory it doesn't hang outside the rim, I'll look again though. It is the same as a hilux setup and I don't think they get caught on their hubs much.

The problem with the lux kit is the length of the axle, standard they don't have the room for the axle so any up travel and the axle punches through the back of the CV. I still think the best solution would be to manufacture 4130 stub shafts with a 930 flange and custom axles. You'd be looking at around $1600 a set I imagine but it would be bolt in and designed to suit. This is what I wanted to run but ran out of time before the competition it was being prepped for.

235/85r16 might be a better fit and easier on the driveline

How thick were your adaptors.
If u welded a hilux pattern on the stub
And then machined the lhs to a 50mm circle u might be able to machine a hole in the adaptor plate so the axle sits inside it. Then just tig it together. Then u only gain a few mm not the entire thickness of the adaptor.
How much room do u need zookfan. Was that with the wider arms

Post subject:  Re: best tires for grand vitara

Or tanshi so start making arms that bit wider then the 4xfourart ones then its just a bolt on job with existing kit. Might need some longer steering adjuster nuts

I have a brand new set of 4xfourart arms just sitting here doing nothing, too. Tanshi could use them for 'development' purposes.

Possibly, actually. I'm going in another direction now so there is a good chance they will be for sale at some point.

Cool, one day the vit will have some bigger tires, maybe even some lift

RE: BFG KM2 - compare the price to Kumho KL71. IMO a far better tyre, and about half the price.

would be nice but they dont come in 255/85r16

Why the obsession with that size ?

Post subject:  Re: best tires for grand vitara

belly clearance was my main problem with the vit. want it to be around 12-13 in on the 33 . works out if i drop a inch out the rear and lift the front up a in maybe.it looks high because of the body lift and the guard chop on the back

235/85r16 fit perfect on gv rims
Depending on the brand they practically the same size as alot of 33"s, they will be alot easier in the driveline, look more legal and fit with alot less trimming/massaging.

I went with Federal Couragia 235/70/R16 and they show excessive wear at 10,000km of witch 4000km was towing a camper trailer. I am looking to fit Toyo Open Country A/T2 next time, not cheap but I have Toyo on my 75 series Landcruiser and there are wearing great :-)

Cheers,

Jack.

Too AT2's are a road tyre and can't be compared to a mud tyre, which is what the OP is enquiring about. They don't come in 255 85 16 either.

I run AT2's on my road car. They wear well at the expense of steering feel and wet grip. I'm not sure I'd buy another set.

I have no idea what "excessive wear" is.
